    Phillies Help With Tarp

    Story and video

I thought it was pretty awesome what they did. The ENTIRE team came out of the dugout to help out. They didn't have to and it wasn't there job, but they did it anyway.

It's little stuff like this that brings a smile to my face.

    Awesome job Phils!

    Re: Phillies Help With Tarp

That's a cool story, the Phillies were the visiting team, losing at the delay. They rushed out there and got blown around on the tarp with the grounds crew, finally getting it under control after a few guys were temporarily buried in the tarp due to high winds.

The Phils went on to win, and they deserved it... where were the Rockies to help out their own grounds crew?

If your team was about to lose its 10,000 game, you'd help with the tarp too!

    Re: Phillies Help With Tarp

Johnny Footstool (from the ORG) sent this to me via PM:

From the Rockies official web site:

" But karma seemed to be on the side of the Phillies on Sunday. As the Rockies' grounds crew struggled to put the tarp on the field with the rain pouring and a heavy wind, the visiting Phillies emerged from the dugout to assist and got a standing ovation from the home crowd. Only LaTroy Hawkins came out to help for the Rockies.

"You never know what can happen," Rockies infielder Jamey Carroll said. "I've been on tarp duty in college and it can whip around, yank you around your shoulders and stuff. After the fact you think what could have happened to one of the guys, they would have got thrown around or something like some of the guys did, you're risking a lot. But again, that was a good thing they did."

The Phils came away unscathed and victorious."

    Thanks Johnny.

That was an amazing site actually seeing "pampered" major leaguers helping out the grounds crew....I hope the Phils win the NL east after seeing that video....

I this was such a classy thing done by all players and umpires.

These guys are making millions of dollars yet when they see 20 people of the groundscrew struggling they didn't have to go out and help them. They could have went in the dugout and play Xbox 360 or something. Very class, it made me feel really good when I saw that.

That was pretty cool. I hate every team in the NL East but this will give me a reason to root for the Phillies to win it.

Even better it was in Colorado, and only one Rockie went out to help.

    Great job, Phillies and Umps

    Re: Phillies Help With Tarp

Apparently the Reds did this once as well. I didn't remember it.

NOTEWORTHY - Thursday afternoon's game was delayed by a torrential downpour at the start of the fourth inning, but the grounds crew had difficulty getting the waterlogged tarp onto the field. With dangerous lightning dancing overhead and the crew desperate to get the tarp in place and get to safety, Casey, pitcher Pete Harnisch, manager Bob Boone and bench coach Tim Foli all came to help finish the task. ...
