    Braves looking at Weathers?

    CBS Sportsline:

The Braves have the resources to trade for a veteran to add bench strength and first-base defense but they could aim much higher and make a splash by trading for Texas first baseman Mark Teixeira, as suggested by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Braves have talked to several teams in recent weeks and could make a move for a proven veteran such as Cincinnati's versatile David Weathers.

Is there a way to toss Griffey in and gather another player or two?
Some people play baseball. Baseball plays Jay Bruce.

If the Reds are going to deal with Atlanta, I'd love to see them find some way to pry Jarrod Saltalamacchia as part of the deal, though I'm guessing he's pretty close to untouchable.

If the rumors about Atlanta being on Griffey's short list for a fast trade are true, Weathers might just be a throw-in to make the deal palatable to Atlanta. I wouldn't get my hopes up about a substantial return.

I don't think the Reds will trade Griffey in a salary dump. He has too much marketing value for that IMO. Especially at this point when his contract is up after next season and his bumping up to 600 HR's.

I honestly believe that you are way wrong. In fact I believe that Weathers might just be our hottest commodity right now. He is a very good reliever and is signed for next year at a very reasonable rate. I believe that he can land the Reds a top 5 prospect from teams that have truly 5 real prospects. (not talking Reds from 4 years ago) Good relievers are in huge demand and everyone seems to need bullpen help while fewer teams need guys that can play in the outfield or play first base. Weathers will bring a nice return or there is no reason to trade him....we need him for next year if he can't bring us someone good.

I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson. He told me to get back behind the batter, that the only thing I knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit.

I've always been a little leary of Braves' prospects in general. It just seems that most of the time when good prospects get away from Atlanta they take a huge nose dive.

According to the Mets annuncers, Griffey's not going anywhere. Fine with me. He'll probably hit the 600 mark this year anyway.

And as for trading with Atlanta. Look at history. We get nothing in return. If they must have Weathers and we are wiling to let him go (which I think we are), don't expect anything. Same for Conine and Hatteberg. Producers for nothing (which is what I think) is not the way to go. I'd rather eat contracts than trade for fodder. But I'm holding my breath. Wayne doesn't have the best record in trades. Acquisitions, yes (Arroyo, Hatteberg, Phillips, etc), but when it comes to trading, watch out!

Didn't alot of Reds fans get a chuckle whenever Jung Keun Bong pitched?

Arroyo and Phillips were the results of trades, but Wayne is only successful for digging out bargain bin players for pennies on the dollar. I agree with you though, it's time to watch out.
