    Comments
Hitting Ability: Mesoraco has a ton of hitting ability, using a little leg kick in his approach, and doesn't swing at bad pitches.
Power: Mesoraco has plus power. Right now, it's more pull power, but eventually he'll develop power to all fields.
Running Speed: He's a fringy-average runner, which is pretty good for a catcher.
Arm Strength: He has a plus arm and isn't afraid to use it in pick-off attempts.
Arm Accuracy: His throws are always right on the money.
Fielding: Mesoraco has plus hands behind the plate.
Range: A terrific athlete, Mesoraco is outstanding at blocking balls in the dirt.
Baseball Instincts: Off the charts. He's got great makeup, he's very aggressive and he's a natural leader behind the plate.
Physical Description: Mesoraco is a strong backstop with a body type that might remind some of a Joe Girardi or Ivan Rodriguez.
Medical Update: Mesoraco missed much of 2006 following Tommy John surgery, but now is completely healthy and clearly is having no problems with his throwing.
Strengths: He's a complete package. He can hit with power and he can play defense with a strong arm and soft hands.
Weaknesses: He tends to get out on his front foot on his swing from time to time.
Summary: Mesoraco has answered any questions about his arm following Tommy John surgery a year ago and is on the rise among catching prospects.
He's a complete catching package, with hitting ability, power, good hands, a plus arm and outstanding leadership ability.

    From Brewerfan.net

High energy player with great, natural leadership skills. Mesoraco is an amazing natural athlete that was well known entering the year, but wasn't thought of as anything near a first-round pick. He had Tommy John surgery the fall of his junior year which led to a so-so year serving as his team's DH. Now fully healthy, he exploded this spring, with a huge season at the plate while showing off his big arm from behind it. He has above average tools across the board, and runs extremely well for a catcher. He has exciting power potential, and hits the ball to the gaps. He is athletic enough that he may be able to handle a move to second base a la Craig Biggio, but his arm is such a dynamic tool that it may be wasted there. He has committed to Virginia, where he was at first thought to be somewhat of a difficult sign, but now that he's a lock for the first round college won't be an option.

    He's struggling so far.

Five years from now when he's still in the minors, we can see how he's doing. Many of us will be dead by the time he ever reaches the Majors.

Wow. He is done already. That would suck.

I like the fact his OBP is almost 120 points higher than his average. Patience is a virtue. I know his slugging is below sucking, but he is 19 and tasting more than HS pitching.

I was just saying we really need a catcher on the Reds. It sounds like Devin has a long way to go,though

He does. He is 19 and just graduated high school three weeks ago.

It's his 3rd week in the minors and he's just out of high school.

    What did you expect?

Could a mod change the title of this to "Prospect Profile: Devin Mesoraco"

I didn't know what to title it after I drafted him.

Last night Devin went 1-4 and had a passed ball, his third.

His OPS is a rough .653 but he sports a nice .373 OBP.

Re: 2007 Reds #1 Pick--Devin Mesoraco (Official Thread)

    From the Hardball Times. http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/ar...d-picks-11-20/

    15. C Devin Mesoraco, Reds

I like athletic catchers and Mesoraco certainly fits that description. Stop me if you've heard this one, but when Mesoraco lets the ball travel and get deep, he shows a quick, powerful swing. When he "goes and gets it," it looks like he's a little handsy. Minorleaguebaseball.com's take on Mesoraco seems to agree with me...

"He tends to get out on his front foot on his swing from time to time."

Both game swings in his draft video show him lunging after pitches and grounding out, so that would be my concern as well. He might need to shorten his swing just a tad (lower the hands maybe?).

Whether he needs to use the cue "trust your hands" (or "trust your body" as I'd rather say), Mesoraco's development hinges on letting the ball travel into the hitting zone. If it doesn't, Mesoraco has a quick release and excellent arm from behind the plate, so not all will be lost if he doesn't develop to his potential with the bat. From a potential point-of-view, I like the pick. There's work to do though.

Board Moderators may, at their discretion and judgment, delete and/or edit any messages that violate any of the following guidelines: 1. Explicit references to alleged illegal or unlawful acts. 2. Graphic sexual descriptions. 3. Racial or ethnic slurs. 4. Use of edgy language (including masked profanity). 5. Direct personal attacks, flames, fights, trolling, baiting, name-calling, general nuisance, excessive player criticism or anything along those lines. 6. Posting spam. 7. Each person may have only one user account. It is fine to be critical here - that's what this board is for. But let's not beat a subject or a player to death, please.

Thank you, and most importantly, enjoy yourselves!
