I'll go for 25 song/performer combinations and let you decide what to cut.
I reserve the right to change all of these on reflection.
    In rough chronology

The Band Played On - Tony Pastor
You're a grand old Flag - George Cohan
    April Showers - Al Jolson
Brother can you Spare a Dime - Rudy Vallee
Happy Days are here again - Leo Reisman
In the Mood - Glen Miller
Don't Sit under the Apple Tree - The Andrew sisters
I'll be seeing you - Bing Crosby
Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Judy Garland
    Hound Dog - Elvis Presley
    Mr. Sandman - The Chordettes
    Hello Dolly - Louis Armstrong
Night and Day - Ella Fitzgerald
Fly Me To the Moon - Frank Sinatra
The Good Life - Tony Bennett
    A Hard Day's Night - Beatles
Feeling Groovy - Simon and Garfunkle
All along the watchtower - Hendrix
I can't get no Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones
Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys
Get Dancin - Disco Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes
We Will Rock You/We are the Champions Queen
You might Think I'm Crazy - The Cars
Walk This Way - Aerosmith and Run-DMC
    Mysterious Ways - U2
Meant to say this too -- this is a pretty damn good list. A Hard Day's Night is probably the Beatles song I'd choose too. It's not my favorite, it's not their most creative, but it sounds SO DIFFERENT from anything else of its time. And the singing is perfect, perfect.

Re: Top Songs of All Time?

These are the songs I've covered in the past:

    Palestrina-- Dona Nobis Pacem
Bach-- Brandenberg Concerto, Air on a G String (Shuddup, Puffy!)
Handel-- Hallelujah Chorus from The Messiah
    Vivaldi-- Four Seasons (particularly Spring)
Haydn-- String Quartet No. 3, Op. 76 (The Titanic sinking song)
    Mozart-- Eine Kleine Nachtmusik
Beethoven-- Moonlilght Sonata, Ode to Joy
Tchaikovsky-- 1812 Overture, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies
    Wagner-- Ride of the Valykries
    Strauss-- Blue Danube
    Bizet-- Carmen Overture
    DeBussy-- Claire de Lune
    Ravel-- Bolero
Puccini-- Un Bel Di, Madama Butterfly
Gershwin-- Summertime or Bess, You Is My Woman Now
    Sousa-- Stars and Stripes Forever
    Joplin-- The Entertainer
    Robert Johnson-- Crossroads
    Jimmie Rodgers-- Frankie and Johnny
Ella Fitzgerald-- My Heart Belongs to Daddy
Billie Holliday-- Strange Fruit, Stormy Weather
    Anonymous-- Danny Boy
    Ellington-- Take the A Train
Guthrie-- This Land Is Your Land
Hank Williams-- I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
Louis Armstrong-- Dream a Little Dream of Me
Charlie Parker-- Scrapple in the Apple
    Frank Sinatra-- My Way
Bill Haley and the Comets-- Rock Around the Clock
    Elvis Presley-- Jailhouse Rock
The Beatles-- Hey, Jude, I Wanna Hold Your Hand
    Beach Boys-- Good Vibrations
    Jimi Hendrix-- Purple Haze
    Black Sabbath-- Iron Man
    The Bee Gees-- Stayin' Alive
Grandmaster Flash and the Sugarhill Gang-- Rapper's Delight
Aerosmith/ Run DMC-- Walk This Way
    Madonna-- Like a Virgin
    Michael Jackson-- Thriller
    Nirvana-- Smells Like Teen Spirit

    Problems:
    No Motown
    No Ray Charles
    No Willie Nelson
    No Aretha/ Soul
    No James Brown
    No Punk
Little Rap (add Snoop Dogg? Tupac?)
    No Southern Rock (Needed?)

    Others I've overlooked?

    Besides, that's 45. Should I make it 50?

I'm not necessarily a rap fan, but I will say that this list would most definitely have to include either California Love or Changes, both by Tupac Shakur. They are probably the two greatest and two most memorable songs by the most influential rapper in music history.

Mr. Jones by the Counting Crows may deserve a mention too.

If I recall correctly, Alice Cooper called Pet Sounds one of his favorites.

Well, you're probably right about that. I guess it's a question of what we mean by influential -- advancing the art, or inspiring imitation? I suppose the ultimate in influence would be to do both.

Not that I've seen. Great song though. Pretty sure I saw REM cover it once.

Re: Top Songs of All Time?

I'd say George Gershwin needs to be included in any list that starts with 1900. Rhapsody in Blue?

I also submit these for discussion:

Frank Sinatra - either "Come Fly With Me" or "I've Got The World On A String"
Ella Fitzgerald - "They Can't Take That Away From Me"
Vince Guaraldi - "Linus and Lucy", Vince's entire collection is pure genius, but that song is in the fabric of American history.
All models are wrong. Some of them are useful.

Countless musicians and producers have regarded it as central to their own craft.

Gershwin is represented with Summertime, from Porgy and Bess. As to Foster, My Old Kentucky Home?

    What about Patsy Cline?
    Loretta Lynn?
    Dolly Parton?
    George Jones?
    The Rolling Stones?

Re: Top Songs of All Time?

I can't live without hearing "I'm Stranded" by the Saints at least once per week.

"We're a Winner" by Curtis Mayfield was my unofficial 1999 Reds fight song. Didn't matter if they were down ten runs in the ninth, my fiance would always have the record on the turntable with the needle hanging over that track.

Any songs that can be sung by me and my friends at a bar is always at the top of my list "Satellite of Love" by Lou Reed, and "Ex-Lion Tamer" by Wire always elicit the drunken zombie choruses of 2 a.m. I absolutely LOVE drinking and singing with friends. Nobody really does it anymore unless it's karaoke.

Speaking of Karaoke, my old stand by is "He Stopped Loving Her Today". I sang that one at a bar in Lihue Kuai'i on my 26th birthday, and did it so well that the locals bought me shot after shot of Jim Beam. Now I hate bourbon.

I pretty much have song for every occasion.

"I Dream of Jeannie" "Camptown Races"--He was like the 19th century Michael Jackson

I once won that record from old WSAI back in the day - I had to call in and say "Go Ahead and Pull the Plug" - it was right around the where they were faking like they were going to change to country shortly after WUBE had gone country. Scared the daylights out of the Top 40 crowd!
