Time to promote Danny Dorn?
By Doug Gray | July 26th, 2007
Danny Dorn was the Reds 32nd round draft pick in 2006. He was the lone 2006 position player to begin in Sarasota this year and it didnít get off to the start he would have liked. He struggled in April big time, but he seemed to make adjustments and he has been very good ever since. Dorn has played both LF and RF this season, although mostly it has been LF.
The Florida State League is notoriously known as the most pitcher friendly league in the minors and for good reason. The parks are big and the ball doesnít seem to carry much. Lots of good prospects have come through the league and looked not so good, but once they left they began looking very good again. Lets take a look at what Dorn has done, month-by-month so far.
April .190 .274 .286 .559
May .310 .377 .540 .917
June .299 .394 .517 .911
July .388 .434 .571 1.005
RISP .345 .404 .543 .948
Since his early struggles in April, Dorn has been great each month since. He is doing everything well. He is hitting for a good average, he is getting on base at a very good rate and he is slugging well over .500.
The Chattanooga outfield currently consists of Tyrell Godwin, Jay Garthwaite, Marland Williams and Michael Griffin. Maybe there isnít room for him in Chattanooga right now if you plan on playing two 26 year olds and a 28 year old over Griffin who is 23. Honestly though, do you want to keep Dorn down for someone like Tyrell Godwin who is 28 years old and in AA?
Played with Rookie-level Billings, where he led the Pioneer League in average (.354) and slugging percentage (.573) while finishing second in on-base percentage (.457)...hit eight home runs and accumulated 40 RBIs over 206 at-bats...went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, two home runs, four RBIs and four runs scored against Ogden on Aug. 28...drove in a season-high five runs against Ogden on Aug. 29.

In 206 AB's in Billings last year, immediately following his College World Series performance, Dorn hit .354/.457/.573/1.030 scoring 48 runs with 40 RBI's. That's a lot of runs in only 206 AB's. He walked as often as he struck out.
