A bit scouting report from BP:

    8/11/06 - Kevin Goldstein

Also getting some late-season attention in the Midwest League is Twins lefthander Alexander Smit, who may be in his fourth pro season at only in Low A, but is still just 20 years old and has blossomed in a late-season move to the rotation, going 4-0 with a 2.52 ERA in nine starts while allowing just 30 hits in 50 innings and striking out 66. "He's completely changed my mind about him," said an American League scout, who saw Smit last year as well, when he had a 5.84 ERA. "Last year he was like 83-85 mph and now he's suddenly 89-92 and pitching very well." While Smit fired seven one-hit innings last night with 11 strikeouts, the scout still thinks he'll need to make some adjustments as he moves up. "He really pitches off that fastball and has plenty of deception, but as he advances, he's going to have to tighten up his secondary stuff."

From Rosecrans: (when the Reds picked him up)

Smit, 21, went 1-4 with 1 save and a 5.86 ERA in 18 appearances (8 starts) this season with Class A Fort Myers, including a 3.86 ERA in 10 games as a reliever (8er, 18.2ip). Last season with Class A Beloit, Smit went 7-2 with a 2.99 ERA in 34 appearances (13 starts). He was named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for August 7-13.

Smit, a native of the Netherlands, was ranked by Baseball America as the Twins’ 14th-best prospect in 2003. In 2001 and 2002 he was a member of the Dutch National Junior Team and was selected to play on the Dutch Olympic Team in the 2002 International Cup in Cuba.

    From Rotoworld:

    12/07/07

Reds claimed LHP Alexander Smit off waivers from the Twins.

Smit, who signed out of The Netherlands in 2002, seemed to break through last year, only to regress in 2007. The 21-year-old had a 5.86 ERA and a 38/26 K/BB ratio in 50 2/3 IP while splitting time between the rotation and the pen for Single-A Fort Myers. It's still possible that he'll develop into a major league reliever someday, but he's a long shot.

If you actually click on the link, there's a little video showing him pitching. It's a cool feature.

when did we pick up Smit? Great pick up IMO, he's still pretty young. Been followin him now for quite some time. I think this kid is high risk, but certainly high reward.

I found out recently we claimed him on waivers from Minnesota. He had a good start tonight in Dayton. I think he will be a prospect to watch.

    Tonight's Line:

    Code:
Date	OPP	W	L	ERA	SV	IP	H	ER	BB	SO HR

    Aug 01	WIS	1	0	0.00	0	6.2	5	0	1	4 0
    Overall Stats with Dayton:

    Code:
Team	League	W	L	ERA	G	GS	CG	SHO	SV	IP	H	R	ER	HR	BB	SO	GO/AO AVG

    DAY	MID	1	2	1.53	4	4	0	0	0	17.2	14	6	3	1	6	14	0.95	.226
Today was his best start with Dayton. He had good control and was able to go deep in the game. The control is really the key for him. I think when he moves to the pen (his ultimate role) his K's will move up. So if he keeps the ball over the plate in an effective way, he could show he's more ready for a move up to the FSL.

    Re: Prospect Profile: Alexander Smit

Why do you think he would be a reliever and not start? I think he would do well in either role; I just know there are not many pitchers who can go deep in games.

In his first start at Sarasota today Smit went 5 innings, gave up 4 hits, 2 er, walked 3 and struck out 4. He did give up 2 hits to start off the sixth.

    Re: Prospect Profile: Alexander Smit

    7 no-hit innings tonight. 8 K's, 1 BB.

A nice start after 3 really iffy games where he posted a line of 0-2, 6.32 ERA, 11K, 7 BB
