    The Bronx is Burning

Looked to see if anyone has started a thread on the ESPN mini series...couldn't find anything in search. Has anyone watched? I have seen all 3 episodes, and have to say i have really enjoyed watching. The actors really do look like the characters, and the storyline is quite good. I remember 1977 like it was yesterday. And love Reggie or not, you have to admit he was a very talented/clutch hitter. I can still remember the 3 home run game in the world series.
The only thing better is if they would do a mini series on the 1976 Reds...you remember the ones who swept the Yankees in the world series.

In the commercial I saw John Turturro looked like a hobbit with those oversized floppy ears.

I'm enjoying the series. The actor who plays Reggie seems a little too small in stature to be a renowned slugger, but otherwise he has a good physical resemblance. Oliver Platt as Steinbrenner is much more convincing than I would have guessed.

The Son of Sam parts of the story are distracting to me. I find myself reaching for the skip button on the DVR to get back to the baseball storyline.

I enjoy the series as well and agree about the Son of Same parts. You talk about the guy playing Reggie is too small, I think John Taturro (sp?) is way too tall to play Billy Martin, plus I alway picture him as Pete in O'Brother where art thou?.
When I see the 2016 Reds, I see a 100 loss team and no direction.

Oliver Platt is great as Steinbrenner, but my favorite character is Mickey Rivers.

I think Tuturro is great as Martin. He is a very underrated actor. He seems to like sports related roles. This one, Howard Cosell and, of course, his magnum opus as Jesus in The Big Lebowski.

I've only watched bits of it but that was my impression to. I think the guy playing Steinbrenner is pretty good too.

Very good, and of course it gives you a little insight into the how it really is behind the scenes. It's not all hunky dory between players/managers/gm's/owners.

And of course Oliver Platt has been outstanding. The guy playing Reggie has done ok, but the guys playing Yogi and Munson have done real well.

I could only stand watching it for a couple minutes. Bad acting, over acting, and just plain bad.

    Re: The Bronx is Burning

The acting is a little over the top. I was 8 yrs. old in '77 and lived about 20 miles north of the Bronx at the time. The Son of Sam story is relevant here, as it consumed the media coverage at the time. This was way before CNN, so no 24 hour coverage. It was just the newspapers and the evening news, but as close as wall-to-wall coverage as you can get. This was also the year of the NYC blackout, which I'm sure will get some play as it happened sometime in July (it may have already, I haven't seen the last episode). It was also a blistering hot summer, one of the hottest I remember in my youth.
