They still have to pay Phillips and Belisle, plus I think I may have the Arroyo numbers wrong. I would think the numbers is closer to $5 Mil.

Arroyo is $6.45M in 2008 (but maybe just $3.95M if they've already paid the signing bonus this year). Was previously $3.95m before he signed the extension:

    Bronson Arroyo:

Signed 2-year EXTENSION worth $25M thru 2010 season- + as part of the extension, his 2008 salary is increase to $6.45M in 2008 via a $2.5M signing bonus- + as part of the extension, he agrees to eliminate clause in previous deal that allowed him to earn salary escalators for 2008 via IP in 2007 and performance bonuses during 2008 season- + he receives salaries of $9.5M in 2009 and $11M in 2010- + the deal includes a team option for 2011 worth $11M or a $2M buyout- + the value of the option can rise up to $13M based on innings pitched in previous years- + 2005 salary: $1.85M (+ $75K in performance bonuses)

Yep, and what does 5 mil get us? maybe some useful spares but not the big SP's this team is in desperate need of

That is why the deadline was so important. Decline Javy and Hatte and that is $3 Million more (and it means nothing in return for Hatte since he wasn't dealt). Dump Freel, Stanton and Gonzalez (going with Lopez and Keppinger and whatever minor leaguer that could be acquired) and that is $11 Million more and some decent money ($19 Million) to play with while still retaining Harang, Arroyo, Weathers, Dunn, Griffey, EdE, Phillips, Ross and Hamilton some cheap pitchers for low leverage roles and Bailey, Cueto, Votto and Bruce all on the verge.

The Reds needed to do some subtraction at the deadline. Good deals for Griffey or Weathers leading to additions would have been gravy IMO.
