    September Call-Ups

August is only 1 day old, but I am already waiting for September. I would like it if Votto would be called up in August, but I realize Conine and Bellhorn are important members of this team. I am dedicating this thread to the players the Sun Deck wants to see in September. I will suggest Bruce, Bailey and Votto for now, and consider other possibilities after I check the Louisville roster. I would expect Bailey would be off the DL by September

    (If Not Up Already)
    Bailey
    Majewski
    Bray
    Cantu
    Salmon
    McBeth
    Ramirez
    Moeller

I can't see any wisdom in bringing up Bruce or Cueto and starting their MLB time.

I'd pass on Cantu and Moeller

    Re: September Call-Ups

Are you kidding me? WK had Moeller up under a 25 man roster, why do you think he wouldn't under a 40 man roster?
Anyway, teams always bring up extra catchers in September...remember Glen Sutko?
As for Cantu, WK told him he would get as many at bats as possible, so I would assume that meant a September call up.
These moves don't cost much as Moeller and Cantu are on major league contracts and will get paid regardless. Also, most players called up don't play much, mostly there for insurance so really not a big deal either way.

    Cantu
    Dumatrait
    Majewski

......but no way they bring that many up and have to pay them the big bucks.

    Re: September Call-Ups

i posted this in a minor league thread, but I am one who believes Bruce SHOULD be called up in September. I think, if he is in the plans for next season, he should get called up into a low pressure situation. He'd be coming up during a lost season, without the expectations of being a savior. Not only that, but I'd like to see him acclimated to the big league game so he can get rid of all of the jitters this year, and know what he needs to work on during the offseason to truely become the special player that he is cabable of being.

I agree about Bruce. No harm giving him a taste of the major leagues under no pressure.

    * Not on Active Roster
    ** Not on 40-Man Roster

By my count there are 38 players on the 40 man plus the 3 on the 60 day disabled list. figure Guardado will be active meaning 1 player can be added barring ady subtractions via trades. So come September the Reds should add Bray, Majewski, Salmon, McBeth, Ramirez, Smit, Cantu, Votto, and Dickerson. One other can be added who is off of the 40 man- I vote Guevara or Bruce.
I think Bailey shold stay in AAA and get a few starts under his belt once he is healthy. Hopefully he will prove to be strong after a couple of starts. Then he should be shut down for the season to prevent unnecessary inning build-up at this stage. There is no reason to have him throw more than a few innings once he can show himself that he is back to being effective.

    If theyre ready why not?

I agree with that list plus whoever is sent down for Hamilton and Herr for some infield depth.

This team is so far out of it there has to be someone you can ditch to open a roster spot up for. My personal belief is that you throw Stanton on the waiver wire and if he clears tell em goodbye.

    Re: September Call-Ups

I am the first to admit that I don't fully understand the major league service time stuff. Let me ask this question as it will help me understand it more.

Is there any ramifications say, to calling up Bruce for the month of Sept and then have him beginning next year in AAA with a May 1 callup where he stays in the bigs from then on.

    vs

Bruce staying in AAA this year, with him starting April 1 on the Reds roster, staying there for good.

In each case the ML roster time is about the same, but his debut comes earlier in situation 1. Any drawback to that???

His MLB service time would be the same in both situations. It is rare that a team can systematically work that out--if the Reds want Bruce as an every day player next year, sending him to the minors for 30 days doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and if the Reds don't want Bruce as an every day player, he ought to play every day in the minors.

The MLB service time "game" was a huge issue in early labor negotiations. The players union was mindful that teams could call players up on May 1, June 1, etc. to try to get around the arbitration rules. As a result, the "Super 2s" were born. Under the labor agreement, a certain percentage of players with 2+ years (but less than 3) in service time are eligible for arbitration each year and are called "Super 2s."
