Eric Byrnes gets $30 million for 3 years...

The guy is having a career year, but I think the D-Backs overpaid for him. It wasn't too long ago he was a fourth outfielder and well travelled. I just hate to see this kind of money paid to a player of Byrnes' ilk.

You know we complain about 13-16 million possibly going to Dunn.. but deals 3/30 million to Byrnes and 5/100 million to Ichiro kind of makes Dunn look like a bargin or at least on par with league average.

you would have to think Dunn can get 70M without any problem

    Yep. Dunn's a keeper IMO.

I hope this signing improves the market for a guy like Freel. I hope he is dangled for 2 reasons 1.) to move his salary 2.) to get a decent young reliever

Gary Matthews Jr set the market for this - a mediocre over 30 journeyman has a career year, and that equals a big time payday.

Buy low sell high should be the name of the game. I think Byrnes will continue to perform though. Derek Lee didn't really blossom offensively till a few seasons ago and he had been around for a minute.

it's the market. and he will be 32 It's why if the Reds let Dunn walk after this year he is looking at some serious cash.

There is a lot less risk in a 28 year old player than in a 32 year old one.

Daugherty seems to hate Dunn, and I for one am getting sick of hearing it.
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

I'd love to resign Dunn for 5 yr 70M, might go as high as 4 yr 70M

The market is what it is and Dunn would be a bargain at that price. But we'd need to do it ASAP before Teix gets on the market with Boras asking 20-30M for him (???)

Dear Lord, are we ever going to learn?

We'd regret that contract almost as soon as it was signed. It's not about whether the deal is reasonable in the market. It's about what the contract means to the rest of the Cincinnati Reds. You tie up $17 million a year on one guy, and you spend the length of the contract looking for bargains everywhere else.

If the Reds are going to sign anyone to a deal like that, it needs to be a starting pitcher. Definitely not a good-but-not-great corner outfielder who seems like the classic example of a guy who will not age especially well.

I've long felt it was malarkey that the Reds can't afford Dunn - if we can't afford him, we certainly will be relegating ourselves to baseball fiefdom for a long, long time. We'd be foolish not to pick up the option - no draft pick is going to equal what Dunn is. Reds management needs to tell Marty to knock it off. Frankly, the Reds would go a long way if they picked up a good PR person to talk up this team instead of having so many tearing down the product. I'm not talking a shill, although it could look like that, but someone that can talk up the good more often.
