    Same old song and dance
Accept Dunn's option and play him at 1B.
Re-sign Valentin for one year at $1.75 million.

    Minor Matters
Bring up Jay Bruce to play CF.
Bring up Bill Bray as a set-up man or LOOGY.
Bring up Homer Bailey to fill out the starting rotation as a fourth or fifth starter.
Bring up Johhny Cueto to fill out the starting rotation as a fourth or fifth starter.
Bring up Joey Votto to play as a fourth OF and back-up 1B.
Bring up Chris Dickerson as a defensive caddy in CF and PR.

    Trade Winds
Trade Edwin Encarnacion and David Weathers to the Minnesota Twins for Joe Nathan.
Trade Scott Hatteberg to the New York Yankees for Kyle Farnsworth.
Trade Ryan Freel and Mike Stanton to the Boston Red Sox for Eric Hinske.

Feeling Good Is Nothin', But It's Free
Sign free agent Paul Byrd to a three-year contract, worth $21 million. (Backloaded)

Hit Me, Baby, One More Time
    Hamilton LF
    Keppinger 3B
    Junior RF
    Dunn 1B
    Phillips 2B
    Bruce CF
    Gonzalez SS
    Ross/ Valentin C

    Start Me Up
    Harang
    Arroyo
    Byrd
    Bailey
    Cueto

The Pen Is Mightier Than the Sword
    Nathan Closer
    Farnsworth Set-up
    Bray
    Salmon
    Belisle
    McBeth/ Coutlangus/ Roenicke/ Majewski/ Dumatrait/ Guardado/ et al.

    The Bench Is Back
    Hinske OF/ 1B/ 3B
    Valentin/ Ross C
    Votto 1B/ OF
    Dickerson CF
    Cantu 2B/ 3B

Understand this lineup and rotation may struggle, due to youth at priority positions. If so, take the lumps and look to deal Dunn, Junior, Nathan, and others for prospects.

    Money (It's What I Want)
    Total Payroll: roughly $80 million

I wouldn't trade Freel for Hinske straight up, let alone with Stanton.
I wouldn't pencil Bailey or Cueto into the rotation unless they finish the year very strong at AAA.
With the exception of Hatteberg, I wouldn't trade any key everyday player (Dunn, Encarnacion, etc.) for a reliever, no matter what. (see previous post)

But that's what makes the world go 'round :

Reds will have to over pay to get him but we need to replace Dunn's offense. Defense is what we should be going for and he has the Gold Gloves to prove it. He has had a off year but his power numbers are their. Put him in Great American Ball Park and stock up on fireworks.
This is about halfway a good idea, IMO. Given that we could use an elite defensive center fielder and a right-handed slugger, Andruw Jones would be a great fit... if Andruw Jones was still that player. But he's not young anymore, his defense isn't what it was and now his bat's dropping off. 5/110 is a superstar's contract and Jones is no longer that kind of player.

I wouldn't neccessarily do the trade either (I might), but Stanton has negative trade value. I don't understand why you would think that throwing Stanton into the trade would be a bad thing.

If we could get a team to simply take him for nothing without anything in return, I'm sure just about everyone here would be extremely pleased.

I'm too lazy to do a complete writeup, but one move I have in mind is sign Matt Clement to a 1 year, $3 million deal.
"Since I've been with the Reds in 1989, we've never had a farm system this loaded," Bowden said. "If we were the New York Yankees and had unlimited dollars, we could have traded for Colon, (Jeff) Weaver, Rolen, (Cliff) Floyd, (Kenny) Rogers and Finley and gotten them all -- and still held onto our top five prospects. That's an amazing statement."

Re: Reds Fantasy 2008: Your The GM!

    Here goes:

    WINTER TRADES

Edwin Encarnacion and Scott Hatteberg to the Twinkies for SP Scott Baker and switch-hitting AAA catcher Jose Morales. EE is exactly the kind of bait needed to lure a young starting pitcher off Minnesota and barring us getting another 3B in trade, we would still have Keppinger/Cantu/Freel in reserve to hold down the hot corner for a year or two. Morales would be a great platoon partner for Davis Ross. Morales is speedier, has a much higher OBP and manufactures doubles like they were coming off an assembly line.

Secondly, deal Junior while his stock is at its highest peak in years, although the possible destinations still remain small in number, somewhat limiting his trade value.

One alternative: Jr. to the White Sox for 3B Joe Crede and left-handed SP John Danks. Yes, some of you think I have an odd, Bowden-like manlove for the currently injured Crede. My feeling: We need another right-hand hitter with power to balance all of the lefties in our lineup, and it doesn't hurt that he has range and defensive chops at 3B. Likewise, Danks gives us a more proven southpaw in the rotation than either Livingston or Dumatrait.

Another possibility: Jr. to the Mariners for 1B Ben Broussard and AAA OF Wladimir Balentien.

A wild, but weirdly compelling thought: Would Jr. ever consider going to the Devil Rays, since it's so close to his home in Florida and his family? Could we possibly get Rocco Baldelli back in return since the Rays would have a true glut of talented outfielders remaining (Young, Gomes, Griffey, Crawford, even Upton in a crunch?) I know it sounds totally preposterous, but Griffey would be a great fit at the Tropicana. The young squad could use a mentor/role model. It's a franchise that desperately needs a superstar like Griffey to excite fans and spur attendance. One drawback: Probably no World Series ring coming soon, although you never know with the emerging talent that the Rays have stockpiled, including Kazmir and Shields. But if he was offered player-manager status or made a part owner, might Junior warm to the idea? Stranger things have happened.

Otherwise, explore trading either Freel or Hopper, since they are close to being the same player, and Freel's OF-IF versatility is less essential now that Keppinger appears a lock for at least a bench position in '08. Whether Freel goes, or Hopper goes, depends on what each of them might fetch in return.

Also, test the market to see if a taker can be found for Stanton. I doubt he would fetch us much, but shedding his salary gives us more flex.

    FREE AGENT ACQUISITIONS

I'd offer Scott Linebrink $4-6 million or so annually as a closer on a two-year contract. Weathers performed like a trooper this year, but he's aging, and we need more relief for our battered bullpen.

Also, find a veteran lefty/switch-hitter to strengthen the bench and help ease the loss of Hatteberg. Candidates who might conceivably fill this niche: Russell Branyan (OF-1B-3B), Rob Mackowiak (OF-3B-1B) or as mentioned above: Ben Broussard (OF-1B).

    AAA PROMOTIONS

1B Joey Votto, OF Jay Bruce, IF Jorge Cantu, SP Homer Bailey, RP Bill Bray

    Leaving the 08 roster as:

    C Ross
    1B Votto
    2B Phillips
    SS Gonzo
3B Let's pencil in Crede, but understand it could be Keppinger or Cantu if Junior went to the Mariners, Devil Rays or somewhere other than the White Sox
    LF Dunn
    CF Hamilton
    RF Bruce

    Bench
    Keppinger
    Cantu
    Morales
    Hopper or Freel
Lefty reserve/pinch hitter like Broussard, Branyan, Mackowiak

    Starting Pitchers
    Aaron Harang
    Bronson Arroyo
    Scott Baker
    John Danks
    Homer Bailey or Matt Belisle

(Challenging them for spots or available in the event of injuries: The Lizard, Dumatrait, Cueto, Livingston)

    Relievers

    Closer: Scott Linebrink
    Setup: David Weathers, Bill Bray
Middle Relief: Jared Burton, Jon Coutlangus, One revolving spot available for guys like Salmon, Coffey, etc.
Long Relief: Belisle if he loses out the 5th starter spot to Bailey. If Belisle stays in the rotation because Bailey still needs grooming at AAA, then use The Lizard, Livingston, etc., here)

Total Salary Outlay under this scenario: Somewhere between $55-$60 million, meaning there's lots of wiggle room if an interesting but expensive acquisition became available through trade or free agency. But I wouldn't waste the money on high-risk vets like Guardado/Stanton. Been there, done that. Didn't work. Move on.

The White Sox wouldn't consider trading Danks alone for Jr.
