"This isn’t stats vs scouts - this is stats and scouts working together, building an organization that blends the best of both worlds. This is the blueprint for how a baseball organization should be run. And, whether the baseball men of the 20th century like it or not, this is where baseball is going."---Dave Cameron, U.S.S. Mariner
Ryan Jorgensen was mentioned during the game tonight. Apparently he said hello to some ex-teammates or something like that.

What business does Jorgenson have in the Major Leagues? He can't even cut it in AAA.
Well, he is a catcher in AAA with great defense. Catchers don't hit anywhere hardly ever, so what they bring to the plate is usually just icing on the cake. The Reds didn't really have many other options with Ross going down, and Jorgensen is next in line.

Ryan was a emergency call-up. Nothing against him, but if Ross was healthy he would still be in AAA. However, that does not mean he can not take this opportunity to prove he belongs in the majors. David Ross used such an opportunity in 2006 when he outhit LaRue and hit enough to make LaRue expendable. Ryan is already a good defensive catcher by all reports, and it may be that the Reds decline Valentin's option next year. If he shows any ability whatsoever to hit major league pitching, he could have a chance to be the Reds second catcher or even the starter in 2008.
Honestly, I don't consider Valentin a catcher anymore. He is a pinch hitter. That is, in my opinion, the extent of his expertise. I think he is the reason we need to have 3 catchers. If we had a number 2 catcher who could come in the game and play good defense after he pinch hits then we would only need 2 catchers. I think Jorgensen will be a late inning defensive replacment as well. I like the fact that he plays good defense. The clincher here would be if he calls a good game. I believe that a catcher makes a huge difference with a pitching staff. Especially when you have so many rookies.
Valentin is a horrible catcher, but his bat is enough compensation for him to be a solid backup, IMO.

In any case, I believe he has a 1.5 million option next year. I suppose the Reds will be watching how Valentin does in this period as to whether they will pick it up.
Ryan gets the start tonight for the Reds.
Congrats on the first start Ryan!
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
Congrats Ryan
I can smell MLB hit number 1. Lets hope he doesn't disapoint.
