    Mets Persuing Conine

According to Ben Shpigel of the New York Times, the Mets might consider trading for Reds outfielder Jeff Conine. The need was created when Damion Easley endured a Grade 3 ankle sprain.

Conine, 41, has about $480K left on his contract this year. He's known to have cleared waivers, and I'm sure he can be had for a song.

Only players on the 40 man roster have to clear waivers. Chances are about 99% it would be a player who is in Rookie ball who has really no upside.

It doesn't really matter. Chances are small that whomever they receive will ever wear a Reds' uniform. Conine has already stated that he is retiring after this season. Just saving the nearly 1/2 million in salary would be a plus IMO.

I'd be happy to trade him "for future considerations". We were given Todd Hollandsworth last year, now Wayne should return the good karma and bring up Votto.

Votto is only batting .248 against lefties this year with 2 of his 21 homers. His OPS is .702.

The main thing i like about Votto is the situational hitting.

The only thing Conine is good for is increasing Dunn's OBP, because they walk him so they can face Conine/Ross/Crappy-hitting SS du jour...

    Who knew?

Jeff Conine, 1B--Cincinnati Reds: The Mets have renewed their interest after Damion Easley's injury. Conine has cleared waivers. The Reds tried to trade him prior to the trading deadline, but a deal with the Mets fell apart. The Twins, Cubs Diamondbacks had also expressed interest. He plans to retire following this season.

Conine should be gone for the sake of the reds and seeing cantu and for the sake of him being on a team worth a crap for the stretch run.
