Reds get two minor leaguers from NY Mets

The Reds received SS Jose Castro and OF Sean Henry for Jeff Conine today.

Castro, 20, was hitting .318 (98-308) with 12 doubles, one triple, two home runs and 25 RBI in 77 games with St. Lucie (A) of the Florida State League.

Henry, 22, was batting .298 (132-450) with 59 runs scored, 26 doubles, seven triples, 11 home runs, 57 RBI and 18 stolen bases for St. Lucie.

Anyone care to guess where they will end up now that they are with the Reds? I'd say Henry to Sarasota to play OF in place of Heisey(DL). I have no clue where Castro is headed.

Just what the Reds need, two Juan Castros. Getting any kind of potential in return for Conine at this point seems like a good deal though.

PORT ST. LUCIE — The New York Mets made a trade on Monday that could affect whether the St. Lucie Mets make the postseason.

St. Lucie Mets outfielder Sean Henry and shortstop Jose Castro were traded for Cincinnati Reds first baseman Jeff Conine. It's a move that could help the organization at the major league level but hurts St. Lucie's bid for the postseason.

“They're a big part of our ball club, but this is a great opportunity for them and it helps the organization at the major league level,” St. Lucie manager Frank Cacciatore said.

Castro, 20, packed his bags for the move while St. Lucie took the field on Monday.

“I feel sad, but I feel happy,” Castro said. “I'm sad because the Mets gave me a chance, but Cincinnati wants me, so that's good.

“It's hard. I hoped to play with my team, but that's baseball.”

Castro was batting .318 in 77 games and will be pushed up to Double-A Chattanooga, according to minorleaguebaseball.com. Henry, 22, batted .293 with 11 home runs and 18 steals.

Castro - low K rate, low walk rate, no power.

Norris Hopper at shortstop.

7 for 17 in SB's....ouch. 15 for 30 in three years.

Career average of .264 with only 38 walks in 950 PA's.

His OBP is not totally BA driven due to his 40 HBP's.

How does someone so small get hit by so many baseballs? I wonder if he was playing in the same league as Jason Neighborgall.

Castro doesn't interest me much, though we are lacking SS depth in our system.

Henry on the other hand is a bit more interesting. It looks like he has some power and speed, even if his batting average could stand to be higher. I don't know about his defense or anything, but he appears to be a decent prospect. Time will tell if the guy pans out or not, but at least there's a decent possibility there.

Pretty decent for 6 weeks of Conine. Henry skipped low A and was hitting well in the FSL at age 22 -- looks like he may profile as a 4th/5th outfielder if he develops. Castro is probably an organizational guy, but at least he's young and pretty good. Krivsky has said he wants to make the system younger, and this is another small step in that direction. Seems to me it's healthier to have younger guys competing with each other than younger vs. past-their-primers.

I had the opposite reaction. I don't know how Castro's defense rates, but I'm always impressed by 20-year-olds who can handle High-A. The first key is for his batting average to not be a total fluke. From there, he's the classic case of a guy who's a walk or two per week from getting on base enough to play regularly in the majors. At 20, he has time to figure it out. My major concern is the high HBP; along with low K/BB rates, it suggests a guy who dives out over the plate, and that might get the kid hurt.
