    Garner, Purpura Fired by Astros

    "Astros dismiss Purpura, Garner
    By Alyson Footer / MLB.com

The Astros dismissed general manager Tim Purpura and manager Phil Garner on Monday and replaced them on an interim basis by Tal Smith and Cecil Cooper, respectively.
The team made a formal announcement at a 2 p.m. CT press conference at Minute Maid Park.

Purpura was named the 10th general manager in franchise history on Nov 1, 2004. He previously spent seven seasons overseeing the club's development areas while also serving as an assistant general manager.

Garner was named Astros manager on Nov. 2, 2004, and led the team to three consecutive second-place finishes in the National League Central before the team struggled to a 58-73 mark this season. The highlight of Garner's tenure was a trip to the 2005 World Series, where the Astros were swept in four games by the White Sox."

I've always liked Garner. He might be a good fit for the Reds next year.

No Garner for me. I can't stand him. If he got fired by a team with a worse record then us we should get somebody better. Playoffs 2007!!!

I'm not a Garner fan, either. But still, this one kind of came out of the blue to me.
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

Hopefully the Astros will feel inspired and win some games against St Louis

Everyone looking for a model for how the reds can make the playoffs need to look no further than the 2004 Houston Astros managed by Phil Garner. On August 27th of that season they were 65-63. They then proceeded to win 27 out of their last 34 games, winning 92 games and making the playoffs.

If the Reds can win 25 out of their last 32 they will have a good shot in this division.

No way, Garner knows nothing about hitting or playing small ball. Look at the Astros playoff appearances in the last few years. He would be an awful choice. NO

In 8 seasons with the Brewers, Garner had 1 winning record, his first year season, interstingly enough. In 2 years plus with Detroit he posted losing records. Then he comes back with the Astros in '04 and up until this year posts winning records including that miracle run in his partial year of '04.

For the Reds, that might be more of an indication to ride their current hot horse who came in at mid season, if he carries it through to the end of the year, than an endorsement of Garner.

Especially when they had little offense to begin with.
