Comp B Pick (53rd Overall) P Kyle Lotzkar, HS, Canada

    Biographical Data
    Player Name: Kyle Lotzkar
    Position: Starting Pitcher
School: South Delta HS, Delta, BC
    School Type: High school
    Academic Class: Senior
    Birthdate: 10/24/89
    Height: 6'3"
    Weight: 185 lbs.
    Bats: Left
    Throws: Right
    Report Date(s): 04/14/07
    Game(s): North Shore
    Scouting Video:

    Focus Area Comments
Fastball: Lotzkar's fastball has touched 94 mph.
FB Movement: He's got fringy average movement, with a little run and tail.
Slider/Curve: It's bigger than a slider, more like a slurve. But he throws it around 82 mph with some lateness and hard bite. It has the chance to be a swing-and-miss pitch.
Changeup: He didn't show a third pitch, but he has shown a changeup in the past.
Control: Command is an issue, with the question being if he can command his stuff enough to be a starter at the next level.
Poise: Lotzkar is aggressive on the mound, but stays under control with an attack mode going right after hitters that gives off a closer mentality vibe.
Physical Description: Lotzkar is a big right-hander who fits the typical high school righty projectable mold.
    Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: The chance ot have a power package, with a plus fastball and above-average breaking ball.
Weaknesses: His command. He doesn't have it consistently enough for some.
Summary: Fellow Canadian Phillippe Aumont has been getting most of the buzz, but Lotzkar deserves some as well. He's got an intriguing power package with a fastball/slider combination. How well he can harness and command his stuff, along with doing more with a third pitch, will determine whether he's a starter or reliever in the future.

Re: Comp B Pick (53rd Overall) P Kyle Lotzkar, HS, Canada

Scouting Report: It's an unprecedented year for talent in Canada, and Lotzkar has established himself as the consensus second-best Canadian prospect behind Phillippe Aumont. He played on a club team coached by Doug Mathieson, the father of Phillies righthander Scott. Lotzkar, 17, developed physically at the perfect time, adding 15 pounds of muscle and two inches between last summer and this spring. His fastball sits near 91 mph, touching 94. His arm action is loose and clean, though he doesn't repeat his delivery and remains unrefined as a pitcher. His command is erratic. His breaking ball has improved, while his changeup is below-average. Lotzkar turned in an impressive showing in Florida in front of a throng of scouts in April, and because he's projectable and has shown feel for two potentially plus pitches, he's a candidate to be taken in the supplemental round.

    Fastball 45 50 88 92 90-92 mph in first, 88-89 after.
    FB Movement 40 40 N/A N/A Straight.
Command 30 40 N/A N/A Hard to see command with that delivery.
    Control 35 45 N/A N/A
    Curveball N/A N/A N/A N/A
    Slider 35 50 76 78 Flashed good tilt.
Changeup 40 50 83 83 Rushes arm, gets good run.
    Splitter N/A N/A N/A N/A
    Other Pitch N/A N/A N/A N/A
    Feel for Pitching 35 45 N/A N/A

Physical Description: 6 feet 4, 200 pounds. Broad shoulders, room to fill out.

    Arm Angle: Low 3/4

Mechanics: Short-armer who gets arm up and puts heavy strain on shoulder and elbow.

    Tempo: Rushed.

    Release time: 0.0

    Ultimate Role: Middle relief

    Draft Estimate: 4th-5th round

Summary: Interesting arm with a bad delivery. Will need an overhaul to have command and stay healthy. Fastball played just fringe-average on this day, but other scouts in attendance reported him 90-93 in prior outing. Arm action is a big concern, with his elbow up above his shoulder, a chicken-wing motion a la B.J. Ryan. Both slider and changeup have chances to be average or slightly above, but lack of a consistent release point and tendency to rush through delivery are preventing it. Project guy. Needs someone to rework his delivery, with a high risk of zero return.

    Yikes!!!

BA article from April regarding Lotzkar...

Posted Apr. 11, 2007 4:20 pm by John Manuel
Filed under: Draft Dope, Stock Report

Philippe Aumont rightfully gets top billing among Canadian players eligible for the 2007 draft; the 6-foot-7, 220-pound 17-year-old from Quebec was sitting at 89-92 mph last summer in the Cape Cod High School Classic, hit 96 mph against Cuba last fall in international play, and was pitching in front of more than 50 scouts during a Florida tour by his Academie Baseball Canada (ABC) team this spring. Aumont will be on the mound April 16 in Toronto’s Rogers Centre, and scads of scouts will be on him again.

But BA has learned that Aumont isn’t the only Canadian with serious helium this spring. Righthander Kyle Lotzkar has jumped into consideration to go in the top three rounds with a projectable frame of his own and plus stuff, and like Aumont, he’s only 17 (please, no Winger references).

Scouts and Canadian baseball officials report the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Lotzkar has featured a fastball sitting in the 90-94 mph range all spring, including a tour of Cubs camp in spring training.

“Kyle has improved tremendously over the winter,” his coach in Canada, Doug Mathieson with the Langley (B.C.) Blaze, said via email. “On our annual trip to Arizona last month he threw four innings versus Cochise JC, hit 95 once, 94 seven times and sat at 90-93, (with a) plus breaking ball (late breaking slider) and plus changeup. Kyle generates good movement on his fastball with a downward plane with easy clean arm action.”

Re: Comp B Pick (53rd Overall) P Kyle Lotzkar, HS, Canada

Here are Kyle Lotzkar's updated stats:

    21 IP, 21 H, 7 BB, 24 K, 3.86 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 10.3 K/9

Not bad for a 17-year old kid. I really like Lotzkar. He's a big kid (6'4" 200) with a fastball that touches 94, a plus curveball, and a changeup that he is still developing. He's got a chance to be a very good one down the road.

He did very well in his pro debut, even if it is the GCL. He probably needs another year of short-season ball, though.

Lotzkar is young enough that a year in Billings next season would not hurt him at all. I think in the end though, it will come down to the numbers whether he starts next season in Dayton or not.

Dayton's not very likely for an eighteen-year-old. He'd be young even for Billings.

Lotzkar may be to talented to keep in Billings. Ravin didn't go to Dayton because he sucks. But Lotzkar has been putting up some credible stats he can pitch well in Dayton.
