    Tzu Kai Chiu

Talked with my son today and he said that Tzu Kai Chiu arrived today. He was being shown around and had a translator with him. No throwing or practice participation yet, but stay tuned.

Whats the word on him? Could he be an elite prospect, a good chance of being a major leaguer, or a filler?

Talked to Eric today. Said the kid has a body like a bull. Solid arm with good motion on his fast-ball. Hasn't seen him in a scrimmage yet, but says that he looks solid. He should throw this week in one of the scrimmages.

Where are we starting him? He's just a kid, right?

Hes just 19. We are starting him in extended spring training, and after the draft he will probably play for the GCL Reds (just a guess).

I'll try to send some photos of Tzu Kai Chiu. Weather permitting, I'll be there on Sunday.

    Bump.

The GCL Reds season is finished and it was a solid one for Tzu-Kai Chiu, the pitcher signed out of Taiwan. His first two starts were rough, but he righted the ship and seemed to get better as the year went along. His numbers for the season:

    Code:
     52 2/3 IP 49 H 3 HR 8 BB 47 K 3.42 ERA
    Those numbers translate to a fine 5.8 K/BB 8.1 K/9 1.08 WHIP.

He was even better down the stretch. In his five starts in the month of August, Chiu struck out 22 and walked just one batter. His WHIP for the month was around .90, and he allowed no homers over that 24-inning span. Chiu's ERA for August was 1.11, and batters hit just .207 against him.

He turns 20 in September. All-in-all a pretty good free-agent signing to this point.

Sounds like a great signing. Any word on how hard he throws?
If you can't build a winning team with that core a fire-sale isn't the solution. Selling the franchise, moving them to Nashville and converting GABP into a used car lot is.

Surprised he wasn't promoted with Lotzkar to Billings.

Thanks. I just looked at a story on him. He seems pretty good. Where do you see him starting next year, and how do you project him as far as when he will be up with the Reds?

He should start next season in Dayton. As for when/if he will be up with the Reds, I don't think anyone really knows the answer to that. Best case scenario, maybe late 2010 or 2011. It's really hard to tell.
