    Prospect Profile: Juan Francisco

    Background
    Born: 6/24/1987 Bonao, Dominican Republic
    6'2" 180 lbs
    Throws: Right Bats: Left
Signed as undrafted Free Agent on 5/6/04 at the age of 16.

    Background information
Born in the Dominican Republic and played his first professional season with the Reds in 2005 at the age of 18 for the Dominican Summer League Reds. Was a switch hitter for a while, but appears to be left handed only at the plate since coming to America.

    Minor Leagues
Spent 2005 in the DSL before coming to the US in 2006 where he spent most of his time with the GCL Reds before getting a two week promotion to Billings to end the season. Before the season Dayton Manager Donnie Scout was raving about his bat and how the ball jumps off of it, but also made a note that he really needed to work on his plate discipline.

A lot of power and a fair hitter. How concerned should we be about his plate discipline? 21 walks and 162 strikeouts is not good in a full season. He is very young however, so there should be plenty of time to make improvement in that area.

It is something that we need to keep a close eye on. The strikeouts aren't nearly the concern that the lack of walks is.

I agree with you. Does anyone know if there is there a correlation between the number of players with contact problems at Dayton (Valaika, Stubbs, Francisco all saw their free-swinging tendencies magnified this year) and the coaching? Was there some aspect of the Reds development program that somehow emphasized power hitting even at the expense of lesser contact?

Francisco and Stubbs both had some contact problems in the past. Prior to the season Donnie Scott, the Dragons manager, made it a point to try and work with Francisco on his plate discipline. The Reds knew it was a problem that he needed to work with, hopefully someone can work with him and get his swing a little better in terms of not missing so much and not swinging at pitches out of the zone.
