    What Wayne must be thinking...

    What happened to Coffey?

What happened to Stanton? and Saarloos?

If Bray would have just moved his finger out of the way!

Chris and Tom showed the stat last night that the Reds bullpen has blown 26 save opportunities this year. Last in the league as compared to the Cardinals 8. If they had only turned 1/3 of those around, 8 more wins would put them in first place or 1/2 game behind.

Think of all the 7th and 8th inning blow ups we saw. If only 8 of those 26 games had gone the other way! If Bray was healthy all year, and if Coffey and Stanton or even Saarloos could have come close to repeating their performance in '06, this is a team in the hunt to win the central.

The problem is that the Cubs, Astros, and Cardinals can all comb through their rosters and make the same observations. Will Anthony Reyes & Mark Mulder win more than 2 games combined in 2008? What if we had made Fontenot & Theriot our starting MI from day one? What if Jason Jennings and Brandon Backe had been healthy?

My larger point is the Wayne bashing is unjustified as they could very easily be in first place if Coffey and Stanton pitched to their career norms and Bray had not missed 4 months.

He extended Coffey and gave him a raise, he overpayed for Stanton on a two year deal with an option for a third, and he took a gamble Billy Beane didn't want in Saarloos. The simple fact is, Wayne has put a lot of effort into this bullpen with mediocre results. Adding to the sting, the bullpen has once again cost the reds any chance at competing in a wide open division. He has made good moves as well, but some bashing has merit. The Bray injury was unlucky, but his key guys haven't performed (Stanton, Coffey, Saarloos, Majewski) on the other hand the guy they were simply trying to get through the season has become a go to guy (Burton).

The bullpen wasn't the problem in '06. It was the fact that from about mid-August, the regular starters hit like a combined .207 to finish the season.

So Wayne goes out and bolsters the lineup with Keppinger's, Cantu's, Votto's, Hopper's, Hamilton's, etc...........while also trying to bolster the bullpen and he still gets ripped.

How about Jared Burton? Oh yeah, he stinks, doesn't he. He about Bray? Blah, blah, blah...........not every move is going to be perfect.

If Bray is healthy and if Coffey repeats his 06 performance with another sub 4 era and Stanton repeats with a 4.5 this bullpen would have salvaged at least 8 of those 26 blown saves and we lead the central.

How about Rheal Cormier? How about Mike Stanton? O yeah they are veteran presences aren't they. Blah, blah, blah......tunnel vision....blah, blah blah.

He also bolstered the lineup with Juan Castro. You left that out.
