    Junior and Phillips

I'm wondering AGAIN if there is bad blood between Junior and Phillips.

Each seems all too wiling to call the other out which I don't think is all together a bad thing but just curious to know what others think.

They said it: Griffey wasn't thrilled by comments made by Brandon Phillips when the second baseman apologized for not hustling out a drive off of the fence. Phillips went into a home run trot before getting thrown out at second base.

"I've been busting my butt and hustling. I finally didn't hustle for one play," Phillips said Saturday. "I don't want to fall into the same category as other people."

A couple of weeks ago in Pittsburgh, Griffey had a similar incident but held up at first base with a long single.

"At least I didn't get thrown out," joked Griffey. "[I've got] 593 [homers]. [Phillips has] less than 60."

I dont know where to begin with those comments. I guess all I can say is we are a long way away from the 90 Reds who seemed to like each other a little.

I think sometimes the writers are looking for controversy.

"At least I didn't get thrown out," joked Griffey. "[I've got] 593 [homers]. [Phillips has] less than 60."
There are some nuances that can possibly read here. Griffey is known for his joking, hence, the "at least I didn't get thrown out". Likewise, Griffey, isn't shy about pointing out his senior status. I just think this is much ado about nothing, IMO.

This is one in a long line of recent events where the media has reported an event one way only to find out in later articles that intentions, words, circumstances were entirely different. Gee what a surprise. Poor reporting from the Cincinnati Media. Who would have guessed it? The only writer who really thinks before he writes is Trent.
It's absolutely pathetic that people can't have an opinion from actually watching games and supplementing that with stats. If you voice an opinion that doesn't fit into a black/white box you will get completely misrepresented and basically called a tobacco chewing traditionalist...

Hasn't this set of events happened every year anyways?

    • Griffey jokes about a teammate
    • Teammate jokes back
    • Media sees a news story in this
    • Thread posted on Redszone
    • Griffey is deemed a cancer

I don't know that people will say he is a cancer but he does pull the "veteran" card quite a bit. I understand that his days of playing like Freel are long gone due to age and injuries. But to think that him taking plays off doesn't trickle down to Dunn and others is too simplistic as well

I don't know anything about this, but whatever makes it easier for JR to accept a trade is fine with me.

The one thing I hope I never see from Junior is that's he's playing like Freel. The recklessness that Freel plays with is common among players who have not enough talent and too much ego. JMO, BTW.

Brandon was guilty of the unpardonable sin of criticizing one's teammate in a veiled manner. If he thinks Junior was showboating, just say it instead of using the line "some other players." Truth is, it won't matter to Griffey or Brandon when it's over. They'll shake hands and forget, but it simply amazes me that Griffey gets so much flak about something like that. The man has undergone so much just to play baseball--hinges and screws and many surgeries just to play here. He does one thing wrong, but no mention of his 30 HR and 92, yes count them, 92 RBI's at age 37, when most players are retiring and calling it a career. And look at what other lesser players make with those numbers and compare it to Junior and you just might get an idea of what he's worth. So he poses when he thinks he's hit one and gets a single instead of a double. With this team, it really makes no difference. Without Junior's accomplishments, we probably would be 59-88 or something like that and in last place.

Trade him? Sure. for what? How mcuh can you get for a near 40 outfielder who everyone reminds us is slow and worthless? Nothing. But he continues to drive in runs and play nearly everyday which is more than some of the coveted we keep taling about. Defense? What does it matter to a team who is woefully in the second division (if there was one) because the pitching is so bad and it doesn't look to get any better in my lifetime. While we sit around and dream of getting rid of nearly 100 RBI's real runs that this team needs with its pitching staff in hopes of finding lightening in a bottle through some prospect or another of those chances we take off of the garbage heap (remember the talk of Saarloos being the starter who was a brilliant pick-up?).

I don't get it. He's here and productive. He is not likely to be coveted by anyone. The most we could get would be garbage. And the return would be hope and/or garbage at best. And he's relatively cheap.

Like Redsmetz said, it's a non-issue at best. Just a lazy press corps who won't ask the tough questions of a front office who have continued to play cheap on pitching while preaching contend now.

I think it's much ado about nothing. More of the media trying to stir things up.

But how does Jr know that BP was referring to him with the "other people" remark? Guilty conscience? He could have been referring to Dunn!
"panic" only comes from having real expectations
