I think they are very underappreciated in music today. Watching Alan Myers on the drums in that video is particularly entertaining. It's too bad he had to leave the band when they became overly reliant on the drum machine.

I have the album version in the regular ipod rotation ever sense figuring out it was Devo doing that version on the Casino soundtrack.

    Good stuff..thanks!

Is that Fred Williard introducing the Satisfaction clip?

I agree with your assessment utterly. The "kids" have come to appreciate/rediscover a good many of the proto-twee acts from England that emerged in the late 70s like the Young Marble Giants as well as Devo's fellow neurasthenics like Talking Heads, but for whatever reason, Devo hasn't survived the ages particularly well. And that's a damn shame. If I had to guess, I'd say it's because Devo was kind of pigeonholed as a gimmick act; video killed the video star, as it were. But they were incredibly skilled musicians and songwriters (not to mention an absolutely ingenious live band)--their first three albums are by far the best things to emerge from the late 70s kraut/new wave/electronic scene of the late 70s/early 80s.

And yes, their cover of "Satisfaction" is, bar none, the best cover of all time.

Mark Mothersbaugh did a lot of music for Pee Wee's Playhouse and the Nick series Rugrats.

I'm listening to "Gates of Steel" right now.

    Devo rocks.

One of things that really surprised me (IIRC) when I read the Neil Young biography "Shakey" was Devo's involvement as an inspiration for Neil's "Rust Never Sleeps". Devo was also cast in Neil's movie "Human Highway". When Neil asked them for a budget for their costumes in the movie Devo told him they needed $34.00 (IIRC). Neil told them to send him an invoice.

My favorite Devo release is Greatest Misses, which includes "Satisfaction". I like it even more than Greatest Hits.

I was always partial to Sparks. Weilesque electrodisco, can't get enough of it.

As for greatest cover of all time, I'll still go Ms. Franklin's "Respect".

Quick question, how many others pronounce Devo as dih-voe with the accent on the second syllable? That seemed to be an in thing among a number of folks I've known.
