    Calgary Stampeders cut Akili Smith

I was at the game on Monday. It was an ugly performance, with 4 tipped passes before halftime.

    From Wikipedia

    1999 Draft

At the 1999 NFL Draft, Smith faced stiff competition from other rising quarterbacks. In a year when five quarterbacks would be drafted in the first round, Smith was the third quarterback and third player selected overall by the Cincinnati Bengals. Smith was selected ahead of the following players in the first round: Edgerrin James, Ricky Williams, Torry Holt, Champ Bailey, Daunte Culpepper, and Jevon Kearse.

Damn, I'd sure love some Jevon Kearse or ESPECIALLY Champ Bailey right about now...

Akili never had a chance. Holdout throughout much of training camp and then inserted into the starting line-up way way wayyy before he could have POSSIBLY been ready. Hell, he only played one year at Oregon, IIRC.

I'll never forget that game he was thrown to the wolves versus the Steelers. He got absolutely creamed on a sack, but still held onto the ball.
