If the Reds want to make me believe - Johan Santana

So Bob Castellini has come out and intimated the payroll is in for a significant boost and that pitching will be acquired.

Dusty Baker has supposedly been brought in to win now.

It's all the right lip service, all we need now is some action. Far as I can tell, the best pitcher who might be available this offseason is Johan Santana. He also happens to be one of the best pitchers alive (maybe THE best pitcher alive).

Minnesota might decide to trade this winter rather than lose him to free agency. Lo and behold the Reds GM used to work hand in hand with the new Twins GM. Wonder if they talk much? Also, wasn't Krivsky the lead negotiator on Santana's current deal?

The Reds have the resources to make it happen. As scary as plunking down such a big bet on possibly one season of Santana might be, it would also be mind-bogglingly awesome to see the team acquire the best pitcher to don a Reds uni since Bucky Walters.

Break out the tackle, slice up the bait and reel in the big fish.

Homer Bailey and Jay Bruce for Johan Santana.

That's what it would take. Dusty doesn't like to play the youngsters. Would you do it?

I wonder if WK and Co even know where that lake is, much less if they are fishing in it.

Championships for MY teams in my lifetime:
    Cincinnati Reds - 75, 76, 90
    Chicago Blackhawks - 10, 13
    University of Kentucky - 78, 96, 98, 12
    Cincinnati Bengals - None
    Chicago Bulls - 91, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98

My guess is Bailey and Josh Hamilton would do the trick.

    Twins Roster

They have salaries at 1b, SS and 3b.

    They have nothing at 2B.

    Phillips and Bailey for Santana.

I would like the Reds' chances with Santana/Harang/Arroyo anchoring a rotation in the NL.

Re: If the Reds want to make me believe - Johan Santana

Here's the problem if you're the Reds. Granted Cast says he's gonna up the payroll, but I think even with a big boost you can't pay Johan his money without getting SOME payflex. If you're going to do a deal like Bailey/Bruce or Bailey/Hamilton or Bailey/Phillips, you also will have to move a Griffey or a Dunn to another team in order to free up some money.

Now, the question becomes, would a pitching staff of Santana/Harang/Arroyo/Cueto be good enough to withstand an anemic offense suffering from the loss of Bruce/Hamilton and Griffey/Dunn? I think it probably would.

I would love to get Johan, but only with a contract extension. But I would settle for Nathan.

Phillips, Cueto and a low-level minor leaguer might be enough to do it AND hold onto Bailey.

If you're going to trade young pitching, I think Cueto is the way to go -- way more sizzle on him right now, and a much greater chance of him not panning out, IMO.

CE: Fine by me, since it's likely just a one-year rental of Santana anyway. Anything which would lighten the price paid would make sense. It's sure as heck worth a phone call up to Minny at any rate...
