    Get Padres catcher Michael Barrett

With the talk that Baker thinks he can attract players to Cincy, the possibility of bringing in Michael Barrett is being bandied about on CTrent's blog.

I love the idea. He's 31, and he's been healthy, so I figure he's got 2-3 years left of full-time duty behind the plate. He thrived under Baker. I know offense isn't what the Reds need, but I think I'd spend the $$$ for a catcher who's a quality RH bat.

(You do not get uglier than David Ross at the plate in 2007.)

Now we're starting to talk about a scary offense.

"Since I've been with the Reds in 1989, we've never had a farm system this loaded," Bowden said. "If we were the New York Yankees and had unlimited dollars, we could have traded for Colon, (Jeff) Weaver, Rolen, (Cliff) Floyd, (Kenny) Rogers and Finley and gotten them all -- and still held onto our top five prospects. That's an amazing statement."

He's right handed, he can hit, and he's a catcher. Did I mention he is right handed?

    I definatley like it.

Only if he's cheap, the Ross/Val combo is decent enough unless a major upgrade is available

    Re: Get Barrett

Baker's managed Barrett and Barrett played his best baseball under Baker. I'm a little wary of thirtysomething catchers. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if a primo defensive catcher was more in line with the team's thinking.

Understood. But he's been healthy, and he isn't a big, slow-moving guy -- he's got the athleticism that makes you think he'll hold up in his early 30s. If memory serves, he's also played some OF (and maybe 3B), so if he starts to wear down as a catcher, you can still plug him in at other spots and get some use out of him. The bat makes him worthwhile, even if he's not catching.

Yes, and the two are equally talent-deficient.

Or maybe my brain is just trying to block Chad Moeller out.

    Re: Get Barrett

While Ross was a giant bucket of suck in 2007, he had the lowest BABIP of anybody with his number of at bats, .228. Give him the handful of hits he lost, and that .203/.271/.399 looks more like .230/.300/.450. Certainly that's not awesome, but considering Barrett's body of work, and his line last year (even in Chicago), and you have two comparable offensive players.

Barrett had 3 seasons as a plus offensive catcher, at ages 27, 28, and 29. However, last year he hit just .244/.281/.372 with a more normal .270 BABIP. Even omitting his horrific performance in that admittedly rough PECTO, he hit .256/.307/.427 as a Cub in 2007 and his road numbers as a Padre were similar to his home ones. Basically, he was worse that what we can expect from Dave Ross.

Ross is much better with the arm, already familiar with the pitching staff, and a great deal cheaper. I'm not sure I see how this would be an upgrade unless we assume the best for Barrett and the worst for Ross.

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Also remember that the Cubs turned their season around after Barrett was shipped out. Something should be said for that as well. He strikes me as an offense first guy and with Junior, Dunn, Hamilton and Phillips providing fireworks, we might be able to afford someone with a no hit good glove rep at catcher.

I like Michael Barrett. But unless the structure of the team as it stands is fairly revamped, I'd rather have a stronger defensive catcher.
There is no such thing as a pitching prospect.

    Re: Get Barrett

I'd like a superathletic younger catcher. I really don't care about the stick.

Though if you don't go that route, I definitely want an upgrade in center. Which means a trade, most likely.

Preferably an upgrade on defense at catcher and CF: by far the two weakest spots on the Reds, defensively.
