Free Agent To Be: J.C. Romero???

J.C. was horrible in '06 but bounced back well in '07. He held his own in Boston even though the Red Sox released him. Philly picked him up and he really did well. He is a former Twin and from the stats.. he shows he may be able to handle the NL better though only a very small portion that I'm basing that off of (36.1 innings). His stats for 2007:

    2-2 1 Save 1.92 ERA 74 Games 56.1 Innings 40 BB 42 K

The walks stand out.. but I think Pole could work on his command.

He might be a good 7th inning guy to go with Burton and Weathers at the end of games.

Calling him better than Stanton may be a reach. They both stink, and Romero is probably going to be costly after a season where he posted a sub 2.00 ERA. IMO, it would be a huge waste of money.

I seem to recall our resident Sox fan blumj warning us that Romero's ERA was an aberration. I also don't see much of a need for us to add more lefties.
"Since I've been with the Reds in 1989, we've never had a farm system this loaded," Bowden said. "If we were the New York Yankees and had unlimited dollars, we could have traded for Colon, (Jeff) Weaver, Rolen, (Cliff) Floyd, (Kenny) Rogers and Finley and gotten them all -- and still held onto our top five prospects. That's an amazing statement."

About the only good thing I can say about him is that he has extreme ground ball tendencies. Unfortunately a mediocre Krate for relievers and a BAD BB rate trump ball in play tendencies. His bounce back this year was largely luck driven given his BABIP (.236) and LOB% (89.8%) were much better than his career norms (.301; 72.0%). Typically normal values are right where Romero's career ones are as most pitchers regress to the mean regarding these parameters since BABIP and LOB% are largely not repeatable skills.

I'd stay far away from Romero.

Yes, he just made messes for the good relievers to clean up.
