    Sunday is the day....

The due date on the players with options -- Adam Dunn, Scott Hatteberg, Eddie Guardado, Javier Valentin -- is Nov. 4.

Baker was FedExed a package on Reds personnel. He's studying it.

"Most of that is Wayne's call," he said.

I hope they exercise all of the options (or work out an extension for Dunn).

Hatteberg is cheap insurance if Votto becomes trade bait. If Votto is around, he can fetch something in trade.

I think Guardado is awfully expensive, but the bullpen is awfully shaky, so I keep him.

I thought it was 10 days after the World Series was over. Sunday would be 7 days.

I could see a Dunn extension (3-4 years) and Valentin's option picked up. Dunn is the power source on this team and Junior, Phillips, and Hamilton have good pop to go with Dunn's power.

Reds should go with Votto at first and Cantu as a back-up. I think Hatteberg is content on retiring if the Reds don't pick up the option. He was such a breath of life to this team and as much as I would hate to cut the ties with him.. we just have options that seem ready. I'd even be for trying Dunn at 1st base again if the team decides to bring in more OF depth, get Freel some value, or if Bruce proves he is worthy to take over full time at the big league level.

Guardado's option should be declined and try to work out a minor league contract. He's potential for 2008 shouldn't be valued at 3 million dollars.. that's Stanton like.

    MLBTradeRumors.com -

According to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Reds have to make decisions on the options for Adam Dunn, Scott Hatteberg, Eddie Guardado, and Javier Valentin by November 4th.

    * Dunn is the big one; his is for $13MM with a $0.5MM buyout. This is an easy decision to exercise, though it will cause full no-trade protection to kick in until June 15th. After that he gets to choose 10 clubs to which he would accept a trade. But I think that if the Reds want him out of town the two parties will find a way to make it work (ie, they'll give him a million or two extra).
    * Hatteberg's option is for $1.85MM with a $0.15MM buyout. This is so cheap it's hard to decline, even if Joey Votto is ready. The Reds could definitely exercise it and trade Hatteberg at their discretion. The market for first basemen is weak.
    * Everyday Eddie has a $3MM club option with no apparent buyout. He didn't show anything, so I'm guessing the Reds will pass.
    * Valentin's option is for $1.35MM with a $75K buyout. I imagine they'll exercise it.
    * Since we are talking about options, I should add that Moises Alou's is due on November 15th. His is for $7.5MM vs. a $1MM buyout.
    * Additionally in that same Fay article, Baker denies any tampering with Kerry Wood or Mark Prior. They didn't talk about coming to the Reds, and Baker has spoken to over 40 players since he was hired.

If we haven't heard anything about Dunn by EOD on Thursday I'll assume it means the club is talking extension with him. If it's just a matter of the 2008 option, it shouldn't take that long to decide.

I predict they pick up all the options, with Hatt's being the most likely not picked up--because he may opt to retire rather than sit on the bench.

I have a feeling Guardado will be picked up.

The deadline is just for the option, right? If they don't exercise that option I'd have to say it's because they are working on a long term deal. They have alreday made it clear that they want Dunn to stay.

Hatte and Valentin are gonna be picked up. Eddie - No.

I'm not so sure. Why not pick up the option and continue to negotiate on a LTC if that is the plan? What kind of leverage does the 'not yet picked up option' have? I guarantee you that Adam Dunn is not worried one way or the other. He stands to make a good bit more money if the Reds let him go.

Maybe they are just trying to save paperwork.

I truly think they are still considering whether they want him at 13 million dollars next year. Unbelievable as that seems.

If that's the case then they have the brains of protozoa. For crying out loud.
There is no such thing as a pitching prospect.

Not likely. You went to sleep during the last administration... Cast has made it very clear that he wants Dunn back. It will happen because Cast wants to make a splash and losing Dunn to free agency is the kind of splash that he wasn't intending to make.

Then why wait to pick up the option?

Wouldn't resigning Dunn after picking up the option be just as big a splash? In fact wouldn't there be two splashes?
