I'd show interest in Clement. Load him up with incentives. I'd also look at Livan Hernandez and possibly Affeldt.

Oh, and Kerry Wood. If he'll except a 1 year deal, low base, incentive laden contract with a club option.

I would try and get Affeldt.

I doubt this will be a popular idea, but I'll present it anyway..

Aaron Boone made about 900k last year and put up decent numbers
    while healthy. (388 OBP).
The Reds have no infield depth on their bench. Freel's health is questionable, and he's a marginal infielder anyhow.
I don't know how bad Boone's defense is now, but he's only 34.

Just a thought, might be a good idea if the Reds are going for it next year. 3b is still a little unsettled, IMO. If we get more than one viable starting 3b when the dust settles, we can trade for other needs.
Thank you Walt and Bob for going for it in 2010-2014!

I don't see Boone as a good fit with Kepp, Cantu and Freel in the fold. Plus Hatte could be back.

I like the bench overall. It's the pitching.

    It's always the pitching.

What do you call Keppinger and Cantu?
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I see Wood and Barrett being with Reds because of Dusty's influence. If they are cheap I wouldn't mind them.

Then look for the Reds to go after Lofton and Erstad.

The Reds really should be going after Wood if there is no bad blood with Dusty.

The question is, do you make him a starter again or do you put him in the pen? What do you think he wants? That may have some bearing as well.

Personally, I'd like to see the Reds make him the closer. With Weathers and Burton being dependable, all of a sudden the bullpen looks a little bet better.

Supposedly Wood wants to start in 2008. That being said, if he has problems going deep into games, a switch back to the bullpen would be inevitable. Many pitchers have walked in his shoes.
The Sox traded Bullfrog the only player they've got for Shottenhoffen. Four-eyes Shottenhoffen a utility infielder. They've got a whole team of utility infielders.

May be tough to keep Wood from riding back to Texas.

Didn't Michael Barrett get traded last year because he was a clubhouse cancer?
