Sonics Owner: I AM moving the Sonics to Oklahoma City

    Per ESPN.

They had an amazing atmosphere during the games when they had the Hornets...

Weird to think of no NBA basketball in Seattle.

Wonder if Louisville/Cincinnati could ever get a team again?

I wonder how long OKC can keep a team if it isn't a consistent winner. Then again, they might do okay as long as they're the only pro sports game in town. Louisville might do okay with an NBA team. I don't know about Cincinnati. I think they might be better off with just two major pro sports teams and the wealth of college teams they have within a short drive. The more major sports teams you have, the more competition you have for corporate luxury boxes.

I would love to see Cincinnati with a NBA team, though I know it won't be happening any time soon. There just isn't enough intrest in a pro team. I would however like to see a pro team try it here for a while if there is a disaster or something. US Bank Arena is big enough to support a team for a while, though it wouldn't be near big enough for a modern NBA team.
If you can't build a winning team with that core a fire-sale isn't the solution. Selling the franchise, moving them to Nashville and converting GABP into a used car lot is.

I don't think there's any real demand in this town for NBA product -- especially not for 41 home games per season with average ticket prices in the $50+ range. The local economy simply isn't large enough to support it, especially with the competition for entertainment and sports dollars being so stiff.

    What about DaVille, CE?

Personally, between the two, I think Louisville would be the clear choice.

They'd be the top-dog (along with Brutus )

With Louisville and Kentucky basketball, not to mention the passion for high school basketball in the state.... there is not enough fans or money for a team anywhere in Kentucky. Not to mention the big fan base of Pacer fans in the Louisville metro area..no way, no chance.
Not this year...maybe a Wild Card

In a written statement, Bennett cited the Legislature's rejection of taxpayer funding for his proposed $500 million Renton arena and a lack of any other feasible successor to KeyArena.

"Even though our proposal for a new state-of-the-art multi-purpose facility to be built in Renton was thoughtfully developed by a world-class team, was financially reasonable and was realistically attainable, we were unable to persuade the Washington Legislature to vote on our bill," Bennett said in the statement.

"We now understand and respect that there is very limited public support for such a public investment," he said.
    1/2 a billion bucks?

Get real.... for a building with one tenant, ridiculous.

The have to get out of their lease before they can move. And the lease doesn't just require them to pay out either, it requires them to play there for at least 2 more years.

Personally I think he should sell the team if he doesn't want to keep it in Seattle but it really doesn't matter much to me as I really don't care for the NBA anyway.

Folks here are salavating. The Hornets two-year run really wetted the collective appetite. Lots of $$$ in OKC and lots of sports fans = good fit.

As far as Louisville goes, I don't think a team there would work, for the reasons Foster listed a couple posts ago. I was surprised that they made it as far as they did when they were finalist for the Vancouver Grizzlies' relocation a few years ago (losing out to Memphis, of course). I think a lot of other folks thought it was a bad idea, but a group kinda threw a big together, and they made it far along the process. Then again, I could've sworn St. Louis was getting the Grizzlies at the time, over Louisville and Memphis both.

Good thing Louisville didn't win. Rumor had it that there was serious backing from KFC to build a new arena, and the arena would be called the "KFC Bucket" - officially. Haha.

Cincinnati doesn't need another pro sports team and a tax payer funded place for it to play.

Louisville? that would be something, but again I bet they have much better things to spend their cash on.

As for this owner, what a jackass, by making this declaration before he can actually move the team he's doing his best to torpedo any support, give him a nice excuse "nobody comes to see us"

What kind of arena and corporate sponsorship are they going to get in the OKC Edskin?

Is OKC building them a new arena?

Re: Sonics Owner: I AM moving the Sonics to Oklahoma City

I think Oklahoma City will work. I don't know how big the population is but I would assume the market would be big enough to support one professional club. I think it could be similar to Columbus with the Blue Jackets. If you are able to sell the team as a professional sporting event at first then you will be able to succeed. The problem comes when the novelty wears off. This generally takes about 5 years but if you are able to put a winner together then you will be successful.

Tell that to Nashville, they're still struggling to keep a hold on the Preds.

I know if I owned a business which city I'd choose, and I know what city I'd want them in if I was David Srern.
