Pretty good deal for the Sox, IMO.
Probably considered below market-value?
Per Schilling's blog: http://38pitches.com/2007/11/06/done/#more-116
$8 million in guaranteed base salary
$2 million in bonuses for 6 seperate weigh ins.
$3 million in IP incentives based on IP totals.
$1 million for receiving a Cy Young vote, any vote.
So if he's healthy and effective, it's $14M.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
Good deal for both sides. Smart move by the Sox.
