Interesting Note (Involving Reds) About Instant Replay

    From Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman:

"The Daily Scoop" - Wednesday November 7, 2007

    • The holdouts in the vote to support limited use of instant replay (which passed 25-5) were the Reds, Cubs, Astros, Brewers and Twins.

What do you think? It seems everyone in the Central except for the Pirates doesn't want instant replay. Any ideas?

Cardinals voted for it too. As far as why 4 of the Central GM's voted against it, you got me. Maybe they are just staunch supporters of tradition.

they probably figure they win more games based on bad calls than they lose, lol.

Agreed, the Reds being less fundamentaly sound for the most part would lead to more close plays, thus leading to more instances of close calls if the rule is expanded to all areas of the game.

Don't like it. I won the "Big Payoff Inning" years back on a Brett Boone HR against the Cubs that was way foul. Marty almost forgot to give me the number.

I don't know why they would vote against it. From what I hear it was just exploring fair or foul, and homerun calls. What's wrong with that? I know it would be taking it too far if it was on out plays and stuff like that, but this certainly seems reasonable.
If you can't build a winning team with that core a fire-sale isn't the solution. Selling the franchise, moving them to Nashville and converting GABP into a used car lot is.

Un-like football, baseball umpires are pros, who get it right. There are always those plays that the field call blows, but the # umpires get right is staggering, when compared to NFL refs. As a game that develops much slower than Football, added delays will slow it down even more. I could agree with limited use of re-play, but these decisions have a way of preparing for further impingements. Was he under the tag on a steal attempt? Did the ball get there before the runner? If so, did the player make the tag in time? Was the pitch too high to be called a strike? The pitcher balked, or did he? My head is starting to hurt..

As an umpire, I am for limited use of instant replay because my main goal is to get the call right...
