WGN Radio: Kerry Wood Asking for 2 Years, 5 Mil. Per

The question becomes, if you are the Reds, do you give him what he wants?

I say yes. Dump Freel (if you can) and take a shot. Factor in incentives if you can- I would offer him a 2 year deal for $7 MM guaranteed, with the other #3 MM in incentives.

That's not a bad deal. I'd make that second year a club option, though.

I'd rather not have $5 million tied up in a brittle middle reliever. At this point Wood isn't anything more than a lottery ticket, and he's just too expensive for that.

I can't imagine that the Cubs won't meet that price.

Is he asking for those terms from the Cubs, or MLB in general?

If that's the price the Reds would have to pay to obtain Kerry Wood, I don't see how they couldn't get him. It's almost a no-brainer.

Octavio Dotel only cost the Royals $5 million last season, and he netted them a young starter with plenty of upside (Kyle Davies). Wood is younger and has more upside than Dotel.

The Twins are paying nearly $5 million to Craig Friggin' Monroe.

If the Reds front office isn't prepared to take a chance like this, they should sell the team and go into business making apple butter.

    Apple butter? Mmmm, delicious!

(I agree re: Wood. The same could be said about Eric Gagne and the Rangers- netted them Kason Gabbard)

He also only cost 1 year. It's that second year which makes this scary.

I'd go for it. But as long as we're talking at oft-injured relievers I would really like to see the Reds grab Chin-Hui Tsao.
"Since I've been with the Reds in 1989, we've never had a farm system this loaded," Bowden said. "If we were the New York Yankees and had unlimited dollars, we could have traded for Colon, (Jeff) Weaver, Rolen, (Cliff) Floyd, (Kenny) Rogers and Finley and gotten them all -- and still held onto our top five prospects. That's an amazing statement."

The Sox traded Bullfrog the only player they've got for Shottenhoffen. Four-eyes Shottenhoffen a utility infielder. They've got a whole team of utility infielders.

$5 million should not be scary in the current market, though. It's not enough cash to sign any sure-fire talent; it will only buy you a risky longshot with some upside. $5 million for two consecutive years is more of a risk, but the upside is worth it, IMO.

I've been saying it for two plus years now - Wood for closer.

My prior closer infatuation was Gil Meche. I still believe Meche would be a lights out closer, but now he's too valuable as a starter for KC. But Wood, for one inning stints, lights out. Just throw gas Kerry. Mix in a curve, then some more gas.

Absolutely yes. It is risky given his health, but for 5 million I would absolutely take that risk for each of the next two seasons.
