    Keith Law's Amature Rankings

With amateur baseball closed for business until late January, here's how things stand among the top college and high school players headed into the spring. For high school players who have already given verbal commitments to colleges, I've listed their intended destinations, but the first day they can sign a written commitment is Nov. 14. Players are ranked here solely on their current and projected abilities, without regard to signability.

The No. 1 spot was a toss-up between Justin Smoak, a switch-hitting first baseman at the University of South Carolina, and Tim Beckham, an athletic five-tool shortstop from Griffin High School outside Atlanta, but there will be at least six or seven players contending for the top spot come June, including No. 3 Tim Melville, No. 4 Pedro Alvarez, No. 6 Gerrit Cole, No. 9 Harold Martinez, and No. 12 Eric Hosmer.

The spring season will be critical for some highly-touted players coming off injuries, including Jemile Weeks (strained groin), Aaron Hicks (shoulder soreness), Isaac Galloway (sprained ankle) and Daniel Marrs (impingement in shoulder), each of whom has a chance to move up. As a whole, the class is weak at positions up the middle (catcher, second base and shortstop), stronger at the corners and offers a middle-of-the-road crop of arms that can't be compared to the tremendous group of prep arms we saw in the 2007.
I couldn't get the rest because I'm not an ESPN magazine subscriber. But I found it interesting Pedro Alvarez is not No. 1. Everyone I've heard has said that Pedro Alvarez is by far the best player going into next years draft!

After a quick glance, I noticed five Kentuckians and zero Ohioans. I guess basketball's getting boring down there.

I really hope we can find a way to snag Brian Matusz in this year's draft. There's a small chance he could fall to #7. Man, would that be nice!

As of now, I would guess Alvarez and Smoak go 1-2. Matusz could go as soon as 3.

If the draft were held today thats probably how it would go. Spring still will play a lot into where these guys actually go though.

I thought Pedro Alvaraz was supposed to be Jesus in a baseball uniform? Isn't Kieth Law the guy that called Aaron Harang a #4 starter though?

I don't think $1000 going to get you the best pitcher available in the first round. :

#59 Alex Meyer is from Greensburg, Indiana, which is less than an hour away from Cincinnati. Not sure if the Reds have been scouting him or not, but rumor around the town is that Scott Boras has been down there talking with him. The kid is 6'-6", his fastball has been clocked at 97 and has a plus curve and change up. He could be a good sleeper pick if he doesn't end up going with Boras.

If he's 6'-6" with a 97 mph fastball and two plus pitches already, I don't care if he's with Boras. Sign him up!
