I know the Rays are impossible to deal with, but...

They are in need of a shortstop, and specifically a "defensive" one at that. The Sox are offering them Uribe but they want a better defender. Alex Gonzalez anyone?

The Rays have a plethora of talent that I'd love to get my hands on. Who would you be targeting?

    James Shields.

I know it would take a whole lot more than AGon to get him.

I wouldn't mind plucking Chris Mason from the Rays..

It's probably not too much but I see no reason why they would want him.

I'd be targeting keeping our SS until we have a reasonable replacement for him.

If they aren't going to materially improve the team, I would deal him in a second and give the job to Keppinger. In that case, a few extra singles making to LF isn't going to knock this team out of the playoffs.

If Gonzalez isn't worth anything unless his team is going to make the playoffs than why would TB want him? And if he is the overpaid stiff you seem to imply he is, why would anyone trade anything of value for him? And don;t tell me the reds should dump his salary to save money for the draft. I'm not buying it.

I wouldn't know what the Rays think, but Gonzalez probably isn't a better defender than Uribe.

I doubt there is a market for Gonzo. I suspect he will be the SS come opening day 2008.

Re: I know the Rays are impossible to deal with, but...

The Devil Rays have a glut of advanced prospects/young players at the moment. Many of them won't turn out so rosy in another year or two, but they've probably got some sleepers in there.

My two relative sleepers would be LHP J.P. Howell (who keeps the ball down and posts consistently high K rates) and CF Jason Pridie (who rebounded nicely from awful seasons in 2005 and 2006). These are two guys who might be lost in the shuffle a bit over in Tampa Bay, but I think they could both be quality major leaguers. Howell probably won't be a "good" pitcher in 2008, but he should be ready to take his lumps as a credible #5 starter. Pridie could materialize into a legitimate flychaser CF for this club in the near future, failing that, he should at least be a solid 4th OF type.

I'd think you could get those two for Gonzalez, assuming the D-Rays really are chasing shortstops per the recent rumors and that they're willing to spend some money for one.

    1) I never said it would be smart for TB (or anyone else) to trade for him.

    2) I never said TB (or anyone else) should trade anything of value for him.

    3) You don't have to buy it, I couldn't care less. All I would say is that it would be beneficial for the franchise if they could get rid of his salary. If they wanted to spend the savings on the draft, other FAs, salary increases, etc I don't think many could argue that it wouldn't be beneficial.

Gotta have a SS. I'd rather the Reds pay 4 million a year for a league average SS than play Keppinger and lose the flexibility he provides on the bench. Unnecessary salary dumps aren't going to make the Reds any better and the increase in revenue from MLB should allow the Reds to raise payroll if they want to acquire a player or players without having to dump Gonzalez.
