    Reserve Lists

RESERVE LISTS: Tomorrow is the deadline for all 30 Major League Baseball teams to file their reserve lists for the upcoming Rule 5 Draft, scheduled for December 6 during the Winter Meetings in Nashville...any player eligible for the Rule 5 Draft who is not protected on a Major League 40-man roster may be selected by another team...eligibility for the draft depends on the player’s age during the signing season of his first contract...generally, players who sign at age 19 or older are under a club’s control for 4 seasons, while players who sign at age 18 or younger are under a club’s control for 5 seasons...after tomorrow’s deadline, no team can promote a minor league player to its 40-man roster until after the Rule 5 Draft, though it can remove a player from the roster to make room for a Rule 5 draft selection.

Wouldn't it be great to pick up another Burton and Hamilton, preferrably a SP though!

Looking at the previous list and the new one just out, it looks like the Reds added Richie Gardner, Ramon Ramirez, Tyler Pelland, Craig Tatum, Daryl Thompson, and Paul Janish. I imagine Bruce and Cueto aren't on the list because they don't have enough service time, and the Reds don't want to risk them to the Rule 5 draft.

To select a player in the rule 5 draft, do you have to have a vacancy on the 40 man prior to the pick, or can you make room after the pick?

    Re: Reserve Lists

The beginning post says that you can remove a player prior to the Rule 5 draft, but that you cannot add any new players. I imagine the Reds could remove the likes of Juan Castro and Buck Coats(and hope someone drafts them) to make room for players they would receive in the Rule 5 draft.

    I think this part:

"...eligibility for the draft depends on the player’s age during the signing season of his first contract...generally, players who sign at age 19 or older are under a club’s control for 4 seasons, while players who sign at age 18 or younger are under a club’s control for 5 seasons..."

Bruce was drafted and played in 2005. Cueto was signed as an amateur free agent in 2004 (but had his first season in 2005).

I think they're not eligible and therefore not needed to be protected under after 2008 season, at least.

If you look at it, at least based on the Reds recent Rule V drafts, we get and lose players who are a few years older and therefore entering that eligibility period.

The more I read and learn about Rule V, the more I'm taken with it. Pretty cool wrinkle in player/team management.
I have a love-hate relationship with Albert Pujols. Mostly hate.

    Re: Reserve Lists

Here are the players that are eligible for the Rule 5 draft and that are minor league free agents(taken from Baseball America). These are our players that can be taken by other teams in the Rule 5 draft.

Pitchers—Rick Asadoorian, Carlos Bohorquez, Dan Denham, Steven Kelly, Elizardo Ramirez, Dushan Ruzic.

    Catchers—Jean Boscan, Miguel Perez.

Infielders—1b Jesse Gutierrez, SS Jeff Bannon, SS Caonabo Cosme, SS Aaron Herr, SS Anderson Machado.

    Outfielders—Marland Williams.

If this is accurate, I feel okay about it. only a few of those guys I would hope to not lose, EZ, Asadoorian, and maybe Perez and Herr.

    Re: Reserve Lists

Out of that list it wouldn't surprise me if the Reds lost some of these guys in the Rule 5 draft-
Elizardo Ramirez, Miguel Perez, Jesse Gutierrez and Anderson Machado.

Gutierrez- I saw him play in Dayton and liked his abilities alot. But with the abundance of
1st basemen on the Reds, It see why he wasn't protected.
EZ- Should be a very decent pitcher in the near future. At times with the Reds he was very tough on opposing hitters. It'll be interesting to watch him mature and see what kind of pitcher he can be, given patience/time.

    Re: Reserve Lists

I would imagine we will see a player removed from the 40 man roster with the addition of Cordero. He is supposed to have a physical next week, and we could see several players removed from the roster to clear up space before the Rule 5 draft.

I can see Ramirez getting taken, but remember, if a team takes a guy like Gutierrez they have to keep him on the big league roster the entire season. I don't think there are very many teams that think Gutierrez is ready to contribute at the bigs for a whole season, but I am by no means an expert...
