Play Reds' GM....what would you do?

I was thinking, given the current FA market, and guys supposedly on the trading block, what combination of moves would you make to create the Reds 2008 roster?

    Here are my moves:

Trade Jay Bruce, Cueto, Freel and Drew Stubbs for Santana

Trade Hamilton, Coffey, and T. Wood for Bobby Jenks

Sign Kerry Wood as a FA.

    Release Stanton.

    This makes a roster of:

    Rotation (5)

    Santana
    Harang
    Arroyo
    Bailey
    Belisle

    Bullpen (6)

    Jenks
    Burton
    Weathers
    Bray
    Wood
    Coutlangus

    Starting Line up: (8)

    Norris Hopper - CF
    Jeff Keppinger - SS
    Adam Dunn - LF
    Brandon Phillips - 2B
    Ken Griffey JR - RF
    Edwin Encarnacion - 3B
    Joey Votto - 1B
    David Ross - C

    Bench (6)

    Scott Hatteburg - LH
    Javier Valentin - LH
    Jorge Cantu - RH
    Alex Gonzalez - RH
    Juan Castro - RH
    Chris Dickerson - LH

You're going to give Norris the everyday CF job?

    INCOMING!!!!!!

And no way is Gonzo benched at SS for Keppinger.
"panic" only comes from having real expectations

    Hopper/Keppinger 1-2
    Edwin/Votto 6-7

    Something isn't right.

This is all comprise to put together the best OVERALL team.

I know Hopper isn't going to the All-Star Game, but he can bunt and he seems to be able to get on base. So he hits .285 with 30 or so infield hits.....and maybe he walks now and then.

As far Gonzo goes, he has to win the job back IHMO. If he can, fine, Keppinger on the bench.

If I had (the GM) a few more trading chips, no way does Castro make my team, but as it is.....well.

Maybe you could convince the other GMs to take less for Santana and Jenks.....so maybe you have another guy or two for your bench. But for.....

Ny point is though, if I could field a decent starting 8, I would sell anything else to get Santana and Jenks because I believe they make this team competitive.....I would also make Kerry Wood a deal he couldn't refuse.

Gonzo doesn't have to win a job back that he never lost. Keppinger doesn't field well enough to be a regular SS.

We aren't in the postion talent wise where we can afford to trade a bunch of young talent for a one year rental of Santana.

I don't care if Norris can bunt if he hits .285. If he only occasionally walks (and that's his life), you can't have a .300 OBA guy leading off. If Norris hits .330+, he can hit leadoff, but any lower and he becomes a poor chouice.

Re: Play Reds' GM....what would you do?

Well, maybe Gonzo never lost the job.....I do recal a few games at the end of the season where he was available but sat while Keppinger played, but....whatever. Gonzo nad Keppinger can compete for the job. I have no probem with Gonzo being the starter.

Hopper has a .332 BA in 346 career at bats. His career OBP is .379. I will take that. My point was that he doesn't have to hit .330 for this team to compete.....jus as long as he doesn't hit .220.

As far as Santana goes, if not now.....when?

Trade for Santana, let him get to know the other young guys on this team and try to sign him long term.

Only we'd be trading away two of baseball top prospects for one year of a starting pitcher.
"Since I've been with the Reds in 1989, we've never had a farm system this loaded," Bowden said. "If we were the New York Yankees and had unlimited dollars, we could have traded for Colon, (Jeff) Weaver, Rolen, (Cliff) Floyd, (Kenny) Rogers and Finley and gotten them all -- and still held onto our top five prospects. That's an amazing statement."

And before the trade ink was dry, I would find Santana's agent and offer him something like 6 years for 90 million with a team option for a 7th year at 20 mill with a 5 million dollar buyout.

You guys say you want a team to compete.....well, to do that, you are going to have to risk some of Castellini's money and a few prospects.

Santana just turned down 93 million over 5 years from the Twins. He wants 126 million for 5 years. That's a lot of jack for a mid market team. He'll get it from someone though.

SI online is reporting that the Twins have offered Santana $93 million for five seasons and that Santana has countered with $126 million for five years. You've just traded away two of the Reds best prospects, including their very best prospect in Jay Bruce, for a one year rental of Santana if your offer is less than what the Twins have already offered ($90 million for 6 years vs. $93 million for 5 years). If I would even consider such a trade, I would have to have a committment from Santana to sign a long term contract before I would ever complete the trade.

I wouldn't go after mediocre players looking for one last 2-year deal before retirement.

I believe Wood is seeking 2 years, 10 million for a deal.
