    Pirates Might Trade Matt Morris

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_yl...yhoo&type=lgns

Pirates could be looking to deal Morris... the writer of the article makes a good point that he's got one year left on his contract which is better than Livan Hernandez (who's looking at 3 yrs). Would you trade for him? Who would you trade?

I think Maloney for Morris might be fair?

I believe he would cost about $10 million according to the article for 1 year. I would trade Maloney for him, but we would take on some more salary.

Yeah, doing this deal assumes we're going to take on some salary, but I think a 1 yr. stop-gap is best for us (gives time for Bailey & Cueto & the '09 FA market). This year's FAs that might take a 1yr deal is probably limited to Lieber... who would be okay if we could get him, but I read somewhere that Livan wants 3yrs 24mil ... we're definitely not going to do that .... so Matt Morris would be a pretty dependable #3 to hold down the fort for a year .. at 9.5mil, its pretty steep but would help out this year while saving our top prospects from having to trade for a #3 ... I'd be pleased if WK did it.

I would have to imagine that there are similar pitchers out there who would be cheaper. If The Pirates would take on half of his salary, maybe a non 40 man roster prospect.

I think Morris is better than Milton. To me he would be 2 till July at least.

Well, checking out his stats, he hasn't been horrible, but his stats are on the decline since abou 2004, slightly.

Opponents batting average against him has risen, and so has his HR's allowed. He was allowing less than 20 HR's per season in St. Louis until later in his career. He does eat 200 innings per year. Last year was his worst .......and could be due to just playing on bad teams.

    I'm indifferent about him.

why did they trade for morris at the deadline? everyone was wondering that at the time, and now they aren't going to keep him? sounds like a pretty weird operation to me.

Don't know if they ARE going to trade him, the article I linked was just a writer suggesting that they SHOULD - there's a big difference there... so, who knows.

I don't know why people are comparing Morris to Milton - one year of Morris would cost us about the same as one year of Leiber and no one jumps off the bridge when Leiber's name is brought up ...

I'm not suggesting the Reds build the rotation around Morris or anything of the sort, but w/ our developing pitchers and the prospect of jumping into the richer 2009 FA market, we basically just need a 1yr. stop-gap innings-eater...and I think Morris could meet that need.

I wouldn't be completely against morris as a pitcher, but i think he's way overpaid, thats the reason i wouldn't want them to get him. I'd rather use that money on something else, and take my chances with a guy like belisle who will be similar imo.

Good point. People forget Belisle is still young and learning. He was a highly rated prospect at one time. I think he could be on the verge of becoming that #3 or #4 starter we're looking for as he matures. Let's hope for the best.......as he comes cheaply.
