    Proposed Tampa Bay Rays Stadium

    http://www.sptimes.com/2007/webspeci.../new-ballpark/

Certainly is different with its 'mast' in center field to deploy the roof.

The franchise may finally be on the upswing and I hope they are able to get this stadium and get things turned around down there.

Championships for MY teams in my lifetime:
    Cincinnati Reds - 75, 76, 90
    Chicago Blackhawks - 10, 13
    University of Kentucky - 78, 96, 98, 12
    Cincinnati Bengals - None
    Chicago Bulls - 91, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98

Looks cool. Not sure it's the best idea in an area so prone to hurricanes.

Reminds me of the great beauty of the north, the Big O in Montreal. I loved that tower- which worked successfully once and so bankrupted the nation of Canada that they had to move half of their NHL teams to the southwest US. The tower was wonderful because whenever I drove to see the Expos I could navigate by heading for the tower.

    That would double their attendance.

They'd draw more if they weren't in the Trop.

Boy, with a nautical-themed stadium, maybe they should have gone with a nautical-themed name change.

Why do they insist on staying in St.Pete?

I'm going to start calling the Rays the Beelzebubbas just as a protest.

I like the modernist look of the new park. Tampa Bay isn't a brick and ivy city. Plus, it's a refreshing change from the retro cookie cutters. It makes sense for Tampa Bay to be looking forward rather than trying to recall an era when it was still a small city on the fairly sleepy gulf coast. I like that it's downtown and doesn't involve an ocean of parking spaces. I like the marina and green space next to it.

Yet after building the Trop on spec and then watching the Beelzebubbas reward them with the worst record in baseball over the last 10 years, I'm thinking this proposal had been be asking for the taxpayers to contribute somewhere in the neighborhood of $0.00.

They have a twenty year lease and have no choice now.

I think it looks like the love child of The Big O and Kaufmann Stadium.

To be fair the Rays shouldn't be held completely to blame for the Trop, it was built 10 years before they even came to be to lure another team to the area and was used to great effect by the White Sox and Giants who threatened to immediately move to the Bay if they didn't get a new place.

Taxpayers have themselves to blame for funding a place that didn't have a definite big time tenant coming when it was built.

Kind of like Cincinnati with Paul Brown Stadium (or GAB, I suppose)

Nah- they'll draw more if they win. You are right to an extent, but sustaining good attendance isn't going to be brought about by making losing seem more comfortable or aesthetic.

People come in droves to see other teams there- the Yankees, Red Sox- if the Trop was that bad people would stay away 162 games a year.

The Rays have tons of problems and that stadium is one of them, but winning cures all ills.

We also have the prblem of nobody being from here. Lots of people ar transplants and they bring their love of the home team with them.

But again, winning would help them in a big way with that.

If you're watchin' a parade, make sure you stand in one spot, don't follow it, it never changes. And if the parade is boring, run in the opposite direction, you will fast-foward the parade. --Mitch Hedberg
