    Reds sign Jim Brower

I pray this is a minor league deal.

Former Minnetonka High School and Gophers pitcher Jim Brower played in the minor leagues last season with Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy, two of the Yankees' pitching prospects discussed in trade talks.

Brower also played in New York for a little while with another discussed Yankee, center fielder Melky Cabrera.

Brower, 34, has pitched professionally for 14 years for eight major league organizations. Last season, he played with Hughes, 22, and Kennedy, 21, for parts of the year at Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and then in New York with the Yankees.

On Friday, it will be announced that Brower has signed a free-agent contract with the Cincinnati Reds.

"Since I've been with the Reds in 1989, we've never had a farm system this loaded," Bowden said. "If we were the New York Yankees and had unlimited dollars, we could have traded for Colon, (Jeff) Weaver, Rolen, (Cliff) Floyd, (Kenny) Rogers and Finley and gotten them all -- and still held onto our top five prospects. That's an amazing statement."

I met Jim Brower and his wife here in the Twin Cities a few weeks ago at a charity fund raiser. Super nice guy. He mentioned then he was hoping to be back in Cincy next season.

There is no such thing as a pitching prospect.

For a moment, I thought someone resurrected a six year old thread (until I realized we got him in a trade...hey, maybe we can swing him for Chen again!)

I will never forget seeing Brower in the mall in St. Louis eating while the Reds were in town. I sent my 6 year old son to him and ask for his autograph. Brower looked up from his meal and said, "You want "MY" autograph???"

It was so funny. He happily signed by the way

I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson. He told me to get back behind the batter, that the only thing I knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit.

This is just AAA depth I hope. Injury insurance.

One step forward (Cordero), two steps back (Brower).

Why even bother? He cannot even be viewed as depth. If he is ever needed, the season would pretty much be over anyway.

Would you rather have Brower in the bullpen or Majewski?
Opinions are like belly buttons. Everybody has one, and they don't want someone else's shoved into their face.
