    David Wells

    Mariners, Reds Like David Wells
A couple of clubs have their eye on 44 year-old southpaw David Wells: the Mariners and Reds. Hey, for a few million bucks why not.

The Ms would represent Boomer's ninth organization. Signing him surely wouldn't preclude them from acquiring another, more reliable starter.

He did have a brief stint with the Reds in 1995, making 11 starts for them before being sent to Detroit in a deadline deal. I read Wells' book several years ago, but can't remember exactly how his "tortured dealings" with Marge Schott played out.

    -according to newsday

He was acquired from Detroit in a deadline deal, then moved to Baltimore that offseason. This better not be the only pitching move we make. Are you interested?

Pass. The only thing he's still decent at is not walking too many guys. But even that is slipping. I'd just as soon bring back Elizardo Ramirez.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

If he's cheap, he wouldn't be the worst fifth starter option in the world, especially if one of the two of Bailey/Cueto are traded for Eric Bedard.

If he's thought of as "solidifying the pitching", we're in trouble.

But...that's just it. We ARE in trouble with respect to starting pitching.

I don't think the reds can afford to deal Bailey/Cueto/Malony.

Even if they do deal Edwin/Hatteberg for a decent pitcher, I think signing Wells in order to have him come into camp and make the other guys earn a spot in the starting rotation is a winning move.

Like Cordero, If it's not the only move they make, it's an OK move.

Pay him with LaRosa's sponsorship and you've got a deal.

If he's cheap, he'd be okay at the back of the rotation. If he pitches at all well, and the Reds aren't in the race, he could be flipped to a contender. I was under the impression that he wanted to stay on the West coast.

Isn't Elizardo Ramirez a Minor League FA?

Yes, he is. And I'm sure he'd be cheaper than boomer.

I agree. If Eric Bedard is brought in and David Wells is signed cheaply this is your rotation:

    Aaron Harang
    Eric Bedard
    Bronson Arroyo
    Matt Belisle
    David Wells

With the improved bullpen, that team WILL do damage in the National League Central.

Glad I don't share a bed with the Reds' FO; their cold feet would have me running for the couch.

    I'd rather have Tomko.

The Reds need a cheap vet filler for the back of the rotation, but I hope they find something better than Wells. I just don't see him making it through a season. I'll pass, even if Wells is cheap.
Thank you Walt and Bob for going for it in 2010-2014!

    REALITY CHECK

Wells is going to turn 45 next May. He had a 5.43 ERA last season, while pitching in two pretty nice pitcher's parks. He has no place on this team and, if he does somehow become a Red, the team will be in serious pitching trouble yet again.
