Dunn may not even be a realistic option after this season.

I think there's a very very good chance Dunn gets $100M+ in his deal. I think the chances of him remaining a Red beyond 2008 are sharply declining.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Committing that kind of money to a player with severe warts in his game seems like a very bad idea. If thats what it is going to take to sign Dunn, I wish him the best of luck wherever he ends up.

Agreed. And Dunn could have a long productive career a la Jim Thome or he could have a very quick and ugly decline like Cecil Fielder. But somebody is going to give him 4 or 5 years at $20M+.

I almost hope we're out of the race next year in July so that we can trade him for a bounty.

    C. Lee got $100 million, so yeah, it's not unlikely that Dunn will get the same.

He won't bring a bounty at that point. Probably a respectable prospect or two with no MLB service time I'd guess.

I dont necessarily support this deal but I wanted to point out the one logical aspect to this deal.

Rios is a big bat and is RIGHT HANDED.

We have a large glut of lefty bats, especially in the OF... I'd love to pick Rios up aslong as we are turning Dunn Bruce or Hamilton for Bedrard or Haren. We do need pitching tho...

IF it did, it opens up some interesting doors for other deals....considering the outfield crowding, and the lack of right handed batters.

Rios to SF for Cain is another rumor ESPN.com is reporting. That makes a whole lot more sense. The only thing I could see w/ Toronto is AJ Burnett in some kind of package to the Reds, perhaps Votto since he is Canadian, or maybe not.

No. 3 and 51 is the highest I would go, and he has to agree to play first base over that time as well.

Remember when the Red Sox put Manny Ramirez on waivers and no one claimed him?

Good point, but there's been a lot of inflation since then.
20 million for Manny is no longer mind numbing. It's not a bargain,
but when you look at the Guillen, Andruw Jones contracts (as well as Goodwin, McRae, etc from last year), it's not that horrible.

Someone brought up Carlos Lee. That's a pretty good comp. Dunn is better than Lee, and Lee had no problem getting 100 million.

If Dunn was willing to take a 3 year contact (instead of more years for security), I'm guessing he could probably get 75 million, easy.. Now, if he wants 6-7 years, he'll get less per year, but I think 18-20 million/year for Dunn is easy, if he's not picky about where he goes, and especially if he's willing to 1b/DH. Not saying Dunn feels that way, but if he wanted to go for the money, a lot of clubs would pay it.
Thank you Walt and Bob for going for it in 2010-2014!
