    Bedard Talks Not Dead

    John Fay -

Just finished my Sunday Insider for the paper. Here's the cliff notes version: The Reds still think they can get a deal done for Erik Bedard. They're not going to give up Jay Bruce to get one done, however.

That would mean Homer Bailey would likely be in the package. I'm guessing here but I think it would take Bailey, Joey Votto and a top prospect to get the deal done.

Would you make that trade? I think Bailey could develop into a No. 1 or 2 type. But Bedard's already there and he's left-handed.

And, by the way, they're still counting the numbers from Redsfest, but attendance is going to be over 20,000 -- a record.
No Jay Bruce! Sign me up as long as it's Bailey, Votto, and someone(s) not Cueto.

I see Fay's struggling to move on.

However, if you believe (like I do) that the team described in my "Name that Organization" thread is indeed Baltimore, then a Bedard trade is very likely to happen, and I see no reason at all why the Reds can't be the team to get him.

I have a feeling that Wayne and McPhail are playing a game of chicken right now. I think McPhail knows, however, that the Reds have perhaps the best bunch of top prospects to choose from in the ML. Perhaps he's just waiting to see whether he can leverage his way into getting Bruce. Meanwhile, Krivsky knows he has a very competitive offer even without Bruce, so he's waiting it out too...

Honestly, is there a team that can do better than the Reds' offer of Bailey + Hamilton or Votto? I really think they have a good shot at this guy.

Nope. No game of chicken since more GM's than "Wayne" has asked about Bedard.

But he wasn't moved and probably won't be anytime soon. Maybe later in the winter or spring, but not anytime over the next few weeks.

I guess I just can't think of a team that can put a better deal together than the Reds. If I'm the Orioles, a Bailey + Hamilton OR Votto deal (throw in someone else for good measure like Maloney or Burton?) has to be one of the best out there.

Now... if the Orioles will throw in Markakis, too, they might start talking about putting Jay Bruce in the deal.

Bailey, Votto, and any prospect not named Bruce, Cueto, or Hamilton would be perfect in my book. Acquiring Bedard or Haren while hanging onto Bruce and Hamilton as well as one of the Bailey/Cueto arms would be ideal for the Reds at this stage in the game. Let Hatteberg play 1B for one more year, and then you can either move Dunn to 1B, give Rosales a tryout, or sign a free agent next offseason. It's pretty much the easiest position to fill on the field.

I'm thinkin' he'd fly first class and unless you're driving the limo waiting at CVG for him, he's probably not getting into your car.

The Orioles have not even had serious negotiations for Bedard. They went to the fall meetings looking to gauge his value and probably came away from a good idea what they could get. Whether they do deal him during the 2008 season is up in the air, may or may not happen.

Several teams could offer more than the Reds from the majors and minors. Bedard is also nearing his big payday and has un-satisfying mechanics.

Kemp and Kershaw I think would appeal more to the O's than Homer and Hamilton or Votto. Maybe I'm guilty of overhyping the Dodgers, but thats my opinion anyway.

Championships for MY teams in my lifetime:
    Cincinnati Reds - 75, 76, 90
    Chicago Blackhawks - 10, 13
    University of Kentucky - 78, 96, 98, 12
    Cincinnati Bengals - None
    Chicago Bulls - 91, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98

I'd give up Hamilton to get it done. Just not both pitchers, both Hamilton and Votto, or Bruce.

Kershaw's further away from the bigs.
