    See if Beane bites.
    Solid idea.

I usually use Bailey as the stalking horse in these sorts of exercises just because I figure the other team would be given its pick of Bailey or Cueto and Bailey's the generally higher rated of the two.

So... I'm just curious: are most people on this thread getting their knowledge about Beane's trading moxie from one or two chapters in Moneyball? All of these comments about how "Beane doesn't wait around" or "he only goes after what he wants" seem awfully certain about what this man is really like as a trade negotiator and, even, as a person.

Don't get me wrong, Moneyball is a great book and I loved reading it, but we should probably be careful not to take those pages about the negotiations with Steve Phillips as absolute gospel or commandments for how Beane operates. Lewis is a great writer of non-fiction literature, no doubt. But his work is, after all, still a piece of literature that portrays Beane in a certain light, in a certain story with certain polemical aims.

    I'm just saying, is all.

All I'm going on is what the guy has done time and time again. That's no guarantee of what Beane will do, but motives aren't impossible to distill if you pay attention.

For the record, I've not read one syllable of Moneyball.

In fact, I'd be interested to hear who exactly is slotting Cueto into a bullpen role and what, if anything they're basing that determination on other than a quick glance at number "5" in his height.
Exactly. I wish someone would provide some sources for this.

I highly recommend it. One of the best pieces of sports writing I've ever read. Heck, one of the best pieces of history I've read in a long time.

Especially you, FCB, the way you inhale literature... you would love it.
