Regardless, Cueto surely wasn't the only piece with value involved in the trade and I doubt it was Cueto alone that held up the trade, but just as likely the talented also requested with Cueto.

I think that the inclusion of Homer Bailey in trade talks is because other teams want him. The same for Hamilton, Bruce, Votto, and Cueto. Wayne Krivsky has never told who was available and who he wanted. Why would he start now. I think that the leaks are coming from Maryland.

I have a platform and a message, and now I go to bed at night, sober and happy, praying I can be a good messenger." -Josh Hamilton

Based off of your preconcieved notion that the Reds can't produce pitchers because the previous regime that is well gone, who had nothing to do with hardly any of the current players in our system, couldn't produce pitching.

So because a previous factory on the same site and with the same name, one with different equipment, management, workers, and product made some crappy cars, the cars coming out of the current factory are crap?

The only thing Bailey and Cueto have in common with guys from 5+ years ago is the name on the front of the jersey -- and that doesn't tend to have a real affect on ability to pitch.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I doubt that it's all that new. Plus new factories make new mistakes.

things might turn around, but expect it to take a while.

You'll never know when that is if you don't let any cars leave the lot. I don't expect to be a World Series contender in 2008. But I do expect that both Bailey and Cueto will be better in 2008 than they were in 2007.

We could trade away every prospect in the top 10 and still just be an 88 win team. I don't want us to shoot for the moon and end up short in the short term and even less prepared for the long term.

I submit a saner path lies somewhere between obsessively keeping every prospect and obsessively trading every prospect.

Exactly. As I've said elsewhere, building a baseball team is like building a stock portfolio. Stay well diversified with long term and short terms gainers, different levels of risk, etc.

    Especially among the top prospects.

Just because they're highly regarded and close to the majors doesn't mean they should have "HOARD IN CASE OF NUCLEAR WINTER" written on the top.
