    Alternatives to Bedard and Haren?

With all the talk focused on Bedard and Haren -- who will cost an arm and a leg in return -- are there other reasonable alternatives for the Reds in a trade? If so, who?

I've heard Blanton's name. Maybe he would cost fewer prospects than the others. The Giants seem to have taken their top guys off the market.

Any other sensible possibilities? Other rumors?

Ian Snell and Tom Gorzelanny of the Pirates have been mentioned on several threads.

Can't imagine the Pirates would really part with those guys. But I've been wrong before...

I've been clamoring for a Chris Capuano acquisition for a long time. He is on the block due to Milwaukee's crowded rotation, and a perceived dropoff in performance last year. He's cheap, left handed, very effective, and his value is low right now. Milwaukee was willing to deal him to St. Louis, so they're open to trading him within the division. Find out what they're after, and see if we can work something out. I had suggested offering them Freel and Stubbs for Capuano, I think that would be reasonable for both sides. They might want a pitcher as well, in which case I would offer them their choice of Fisher/LeCure/Thompson.

I don't think acquiring Bedard or Haren would or should prevent the Reds from going after Capuano.

I agree. I say get Capuano no matter what, then decide whether or not you're willing to pay the bounty for Bedard or Haren.

I'd land the big fish first, then worry about Capuano. #1 starters are harder to come by than mid-rotation guys.

Edinson Volquez -- he's more a post-2008 guy, but I like the arm.

I wouldn't. You get Capuano- who you want no matter what, given the cost. You're not sure if you're willing to pay what it will take to get Haren or Bedard (especially if it means Jay Bruce), so you re-evaluate based off of your current roster (which should include Capuano.)
