    12-13-2007 Running Mitchell Report Thread

The day is finally here. Alot of light should be shed today, but from that light could come even more questions.

    The first domino....Roger Clemens.

On Mike and Mike in the Morning, an ESPN the Magazine report was read stating that a former strength and conditioning coach with the Yankees admitted to purchasing and supplying Roger Clemens with steroids while he played for the New York Yankees.

    Should be quite a day.

Mods, you can move this if you want, but I think a new thread is warranted for the day.

No surprise about Clemens. I think we all knew he did something. I'm not so sure I would be surprised at anyone who will be on that list. I really believe almost all the MLB players have at least dabbled with it.

Which current Reds, if any, do you expect to see on the list?

Maybe it's my rose colored glasses, but I just can't see any current Reds on the list.

Jorge Cantu is the first name that pops into my head as a "maybe", but we all know he's not here anymore.

Current Reds, I have no idea.

One somewhat prominent former Red that wouldn't surprise me is Greg Vaughn.

I suspect Eric Davis. And I hate myself for that.

I thought that exact thing. Vaughn wouldn't surprise me at all.

As this begins to unfold what I find myself hoping for is that this isn't offered as the final word on the subject. This only begins to shine the light on the problem.

What baseball needs is a Truth Commission. This is too widespread to make it a tool for punishment, but the sport can perform a mea culpa, give players an avenue where they can come clean and hopefully make it so that the next generation knows better. It hurts to think that my generation has collectively smeared its own legacy in the sport, but it has. It would be nice to see them step up to make sure the next generation doesn't repeat Gen X's mistakes.

I won't be as shocked as some if Junior shows up. Wild speculation on my part of course.

    Marcus Giles
    Steve Finley

this report is destined to miss so many offenders

there will be a lot of very relieved ballplayers today

plus a lot of teenaged boys interested in getting in on the action.

From my understanding, the reason that there are 'only' 60-80 names in the report is due to the lack of cooperation by the players union. The information they gathered was strong-armed out of some clubhouse attendants and team trainers, most notably the trainer from the Mets.

If they have 60-80 names out of such a limited resource, what would they have found if they had had full cooperation?

Everyone is naming hitters. I think we will see a massive amount of pitchers on the list.

Bret Boone would be my guess as to one of many.

How will this affect Bud Selig's legacy? He obviously knew this was going on. Should he be banned from baseball and ineligble for the HOF ?

I don't know that full cooperation even helps, but I suspect that more than half of the players are offenders
