Mariners close to signing Carlos Silva

    Per Rosenthal.

Sources: M's in serious talks with Silva

Carlos Silva, perhaps the top starting pitcher remaining on the free-agent market, does not figure to be available much longer.

The Mariners are in serious negotiations with Silva on a contract that would be worth at least $44 million over four years, according to major-league sources.

For the Mariners, the signing of Silva would put them halfway toward their goal of adding two starting pitchers this off-season. They also are pursuing Orioles left-hander Erik Bedard in a trade.

Silva, 28, became a primary focus for the Mariners after they lost Japanese free-agent right-hander Hiroki Kuroda to the Dodgers over the weekend.

    Better them than us.
"Since I've been with the Reds in 1989, we've never had a farm system this loaded," Bowden said. "If we were the New York Yankees and had unlimited dollars, we could have traded for Colon, (Jeff) Weaver, Rolen, (Cliff) Floyd, (Kenny) Rogers and Finley and gotten them all -- and still held onto our top five prospects. That's an amazing statement."

If true, does this mean the M's are throwing in the towel on Bedard? Could be good for the Reds.

If true, good news on 3 levels:

    1. It lessens the possibility that the M's will be a major competitor for Bedard.

    2. If you want Blanton, it probably slightly increases the possibility that Oakland will go into full rebuild mode.

    3. Obviously, it means we won't be writing a check for Silva.

Would you rather have Bedard or Silva, Bailey, Votto and possibly more?

    Just curious.

You forgot Votto/Bailey making the minimum.

And you forgot Bedard's extension, which will be quite pricey.

I think you're missing the point. If you're going to pay Silva that amount of money for 4 years, you might as well upgrade.

Who said anything about an extension for Bedard? I don't think that's written into the trade.

Seattle and the Dodgers have spent their money elsewhere. The Tigers went after Willis. The DBacks went after Haren. The Orioles don't want to trade Bedard in the division.

Unless the Mets suddenly offer up a combination that gets the O's mouths watering, the Reds look to be the leading suitor for Bedard.

I not missing anything...I am no huge fan of Silva. But while Silva costs money, Bedard will cost money and top prospects.

    This isn't just about money.

If Wayne goes out and gets Bedard, he better pray that this team is playing well into October this season. If he doesn't, he's gonna look like a complete fool because next year's FA class is strong and he could have waited to get that stud pitcher without giving up Homer, Votto, Cueto, etc.

MLBTradeRumors had a blurb this morning about the Cubs being in on him as well but I would imagine the Reds are in the driver's seat.
