Miguel Perez signed by the Pirates

Found this on mlb.com and thought it was noteworthy, especially given the feeling by some that Perez was just getting the handle of hitting. It's a minor league deal, BTW.

Miguel Perez (C) - Hit a combined .322 with eight home runs and 25 RBI in 42 minor league games in 2007. Originally signed by Cincinnati as non-drafted free agent on 11/15/00, the 24-year-old backstop from Venezuela has spent his entire minor league career in the Reds system. He was a mid-season Florida State League All-Star selection while playing with Sarasota in 2005 and made his major league debut with the Reds that season, appearing in two games.
"Since I've been with the Reds in 1989, we've never had a farm system this loaded," Bowden said. "If we were the New York Yankees and had unlimited dollars, we could have traded for Colon, (Jeff) Weaver, Rolen, (Cliff) Floyd, (Kenny) Rogers and Finley and gotten them all -- and still held onto our top five prospects. That's an amazing statement."

Miguel is a great young player in my mind. I thought he could eventually be a above average MLB backstop. I hope he does well in a Pirate uniform.
If you can't build a winning team with that core a fire-sale isn't the solution. Selling the franchise, moving them to Nashville and converting GABP into a used car lot is.

I'm really not clear on why we handled our 6 year guys the way we did. It'll be interesting to see how Perez comes along.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Letting go of Asadorian and Perez makes no sense. And even the lizard had some value to us as a guy who could make a few spot starts. But Perez IMO will be a big loss, I don't think it's a coincidence (although it could be) that he finally started hitting well after he came back from that surgery. And that was supposedly his only flaw.

Bad call Wayne, you have should have paid more attention to him. :thumbdown

I am visiting family in upstate New York. I was stunned to see one of my old favorite farm hands for the Reds Miguel Perez starting at C for a short season A team.

Some of the responses in this thread are hilarious. Man we have come a long way in terms of quality catching depth in the minors.

This is really ironic. The thread title is in play again.
