Would you do this junk for junk trade?

    Reds give up:

    Stanton, Freel

    Dodgers give up:

Juan Pierre, Andy LaRoche, 12 million dollars.

Salaries.. Pierre is owed 7 million/year for the next 4 years.
Stanton and Freel's salaries balance out the 2008 cost. The
12 million over the remaining 3 years would make Pierre cost 5 million/year. (If Stanton's option vests, that's another approx 3 million saved).

I'm assuming LA is going to use Garicparra at 3b, but maybe I'm wrong on that.. But let's assume LaRoche is available after his disappointing season.

    Would you do this deal?

EDITED to update the real cost of Pierre.

Thank you Walt and Bob for going for it in 2010-2014!

Why would the Dodgers do that deal?

For real? How could you not? I wouldn't call LaRoche junk so fast. I'd take Pierre over Freel and to get rid of Stanton, of course. No brainer to me at least.

Isn't Pierre making $10M per season?

And well..... he has that weenie arm and no pop at all, I'd rather look elsewhere for mediocrity.

Absolute no-brainer in my mind, as long as they still have enough $ to re-sign Dunn.

You then trade Bailey, LaRoche, and Stubbs to Baltimore for Bedard (I think that would be more than enough to get it done- the O's were reportedly very interested in LaRoche before LA signed Kuroda.) You do so knowing that Bedard is gone via FA in two years.

Pierre plays for free for the next two years in CF, and you wait til someone gets hurt this year to call up Bruce to play everday. Buy-out Jr.'s option after the season (if you can't trade him during it), and your OF for 2009-2011 is Dunn-Pierre-Bruce.

Now, I highly doubt whether LA would be willing to do this- LaRoche is still pretty highly regarded.

    No.

Pierre is terrible. I'd rather keep Freel.

If that was "more than enough" in the O's opinion, we would already have Bedard.

They probably wouldn't. I was just posing the hypothetical from the Reds point of view to spur some discussion. A better question would've been to leave LaRoche out and just make the trade be Pierre + cash for Stanton and Freel. That would be a more realistic trade. LA might do that one.

And I agree with the other poster that LaRoche isn't really junk.

I thought he got 35 million for 5 years.. Making it 7 million/year.
But I could be wrong. (That's what a quick google search gave me).

    Why?

LaRoche is probably slightly more valued than Votto. I don't know that the Reds ever offered Bailey+Votto+Stubbs, and even if they did this offer would be slightly better.
