Intriguing argument ... Memphis to the SEC?

I would love to see the SEC add Memphis, but not lose anyone so the SEC would need to add a few/couple more teams.

Memphis joining the SEC would catapult their sports programs into the next stratosphere.

GA, another interesting team to consider... one that would significantly expand the TV audience: Houston.

What makes the argument interesting? The SEC already has 12 teams. Adding 2 more would just make the football schedules even more unbalanced. Instead of not playing 3 teams from the other side now it would be 4. And other than every blue moon, Memphis is going to be a Vanderbilt-esque doormat in football. Same with just about anyone you bring in because it is unlikely a Miami or FSU is going to jump ship when they are more than fine where they are.

For basketball, Memphis would make the SEC better. For football it would just give the haters some more ammo as it would pull the number of crappy teams in the SEC closer to the number of crappy teams in the Big Ten.

The only thing saving Memphis is playing Tennessee and Gonzaga midway through the season. They play such a weak conference schedule that it will show up in the NCAA tournament, regardless of who they have playing.

I am all for Memphis in the SEC, but I don't see it happening.

Memphis should have followed UC to the Big East.

My Dad is a college administrator and was involved in picking teams to be added to a conference at one time. I started rattling off names of teams that had performed well recently in sports as good programs to consider.
After a couple minutes he said, "Son, you have to realize that athletics plays a small role in this decision. Conferences are looking for schools that fit well with their culture, academics and revenue. Being good at a particular sport really doesn't carry as much water as you might think."
Memphis is a commuter school with very little tradition and a fair weather fan base. IMO they are a bad fit.

FSU and the u both rejected SEC membership back in the early 90's, they both felt it would be too hard to win national titles in the conference.

    Ha.

Anyway conferences shouldn't get bigger then 12 teams, just makes scheduling too hard beyond that, and nobody in the SEC really deserves to be kicked out.

I think they will in time. If Memphis leaves CUSA, it will be for the Big East.

Re: Intriguing argument ... Memphis to the SEC?

The Big East teams are largely urban teams, universities with heavy black populations, and Catholic schools.

SEC teams are largely white public schools that bring in black folk from the city to their pastoral campuses.

Memphis would be a much better fit in the Big East.

But make no mistake: the SEC would be much more competitive by adding Memphis. The Tigers'd go immediately to the head of the class in that now-weak conference.

Outside of Florida, the SEC has been an absolute dog for about 5 years.

I like the SEC at 12 teams. They don't need to expand

Re: Intriguing argument ... Memphis to the SEC?

    Current CUSA teams
    East Carolina
    Houston
    Marshall
    Memphis
    Rice
    Southern Methodist
    Southern Miss
    Tulane
    Tulsa
    UAB
    UCF
    UTEP

    Current SEC Teams
    Alabama
    Arkansas
    Auburn
    Florida
    Georgia
    Kentucky
    LSU
    Mississippi
    Mississippi State
    South Carolina
    Tennessee
    Vanderbilt

Swap Memphis with Mississippi and UCF with Mississippi State and you have a better SEC, and more balanced (chock full o' suck) CUSA. If you're only going to swap 2 teams, Memphis and Mississippi make the most sense.
