1 year, 3 million I can definatly live with.
"Since I've been with the Reds in 1989, we've never had a farm system this loaded," Bowden said. "If we were the New York Yankees and had unlimited dollars, we could have traded for Colon, (Jeff) Weaver, Rolen, (Cliff) Floyd, (Kenny) Rogers and Finley and gotten them all -- and still held onto our top five prospects. That's an amazing statement."

I like that he can either start or relieve. And he's a lefty, which is good as well.

Let's look at the positives -

    He's a lefty.
    He's got decent stuff.
    He's cheap.
    He's only 28.

    Not bad.
Some people play baseball. Baseball plays Jay Bruce.

    So does Mike Stanton

For the record, this looks to be a good pickup.

True.. But Affeldt's numbers are pretty good in the post season (7 Games):

    2-1 1.69 ERA 5.1 Inn. 1 BB 4 SO

The Reds should've signed him for $8M then....

I wonder if he's got intangible incentives in his contract?

    Nice pick up.

Yep, BB/9 rates over 5 the last 3 years (5.26, 5.09, 5.03). However, he's generally had FIPs in the mid to low 4s, with one outlier of 5.71. He seems like an OK pickup for aforementioned reasons, but I don't think he's anything to get excited about.

FIP really isn't a good metric for relievers.

I'm assuming this is because HR allowed rates are too variable at their small IP levels? One other good aspect is that if he has a half decent season, he might fetch something in a trade or even a prospect if he walks.

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
